Awkard Situation

I applied for a fall internship program at a local IB, solid place. I was rejected for an first rd interview while kids who have much worse resume than me from my school made it in for an interview. I am not saying that as a matter of speculation, I know that for a fact.

Anyway, I was a little pissed off about that and I realized I knew their senior managing director via some tenuous connections. So I emailed him and the MD told me to talk to the associate who rejected me again.

Basically, I want this internship and I don't care who I have to piss off to get it. What should I say to this associate over email/phone?

The reason that you didn't get hired is because they don't like you. Maybe you smell bad, or are ugly. Maybe you're a bit of a dick. I've gotten passed over for people less qualified before too, so I know what you're going through.

All I'm saying is that it is unlikely that the associate will hire you if he didn't like you the first time. Go buy Winning Friends and Influencing People, some deodorant and acne cream, and a bucket of ice cream to cry it out. You'll get over it.

One thing you should keep in mind is that those people whom you don't care if you piss off will also be your coworkers all summer if you do somehow get the gig. Make sure you're respectful and don't come off sounding like an entitled punk kid. Even if you get a courtesy interview b/c you pulled the end around through the MD, if you piss off the associate he'll just automatically ding you in the interview and tell his MD "oh, he wasn't a fit". And that will be that, and you're working at McDonalds this summer.

Yeah thanks for the advice guys,

I was definitely pissed off since I got to a nontarget and this is like the first firm to do actual IB recruiting here. And the associate is an alum. I just hate to see kids who had never wanted to work in IB break in while I sit at home wondering what the f. For whatever it is worth, I never met/called the guy before.

I guess I will just be super respectable and move on.

Either that or you can find out where he lives, hold him at knife point and guarantee that his family will mysteriously vanish one afternoon, never to be seen again, unless he gets you that fucking job.

Take some time to think about ALL the options here.

I agree with the guy who said they didn't like YOU. Not your experience. Happens all the time. I suggest getting introspective and figure out what you did wrong and fix it. Sorry for the harsh words.
