Bachelor of Commerce vs Bachelor of Management
Im about to start a college/university transfer program this september and Ive got 2 choices (these are canadian schools so hopefully there are some canadians here who can help me). Both of these degrees start at Grant Macewan college for the first two years and count as a degree fromt he respective university.
-
Bachelor of Commerce Degree through University of Alberta which I can major in finance or accounting.
-
Bachelor of Management Degree though University of Lethbridge which I can major in finance or accounting.
Now Ive heard these are the basically the exact same program except for the fact that the UofA route requires Calculus (and in order to get the prereq for calculus I would spend the next 4 months upgrading before I could qualify to start in january).
Now I can think that the only reason to go to the UofA would be to have that name on my resume. I am leaning more towards the UofL route just because I can get started in september and get into the workforce sooner.
Thoughts?
If you want to take the CA route it's easier to go to UofA beacuse its just a WAY better school.
UofL is ok i guess, but it ll be more of an uphill battle.
If you want ibanking, both could make life very hard for you. There are only a handful of UoA bankers in Canada.
what would you recommend for ibanking in canada then?
1) Ivey (Western) 2) Queen's 3) McGill 4) Toronto 5) Calgary 6) Schulich
Stick to Ivey or Queen's if you want to have a good shot. McGill is good too. After that it's going to be a bit tough.
As a disclaimer I am a student at Queen's Commerce '07.
well it said on Ivey's site that they send 22% of there graduates to Investment banking so that would make it the best if that number is true. But that would mean about 50 people get into Investment banking which seems like alot for any canadian school.
If your talking about MBA the best 2 finance schools are Ivey and Rotman. for undergraduate I would put Schulich behind Queens
Seeing as my family is poor I would probably be unable to go to those schools right now. But what about after I get my degree and decide to get my MBA? Would it be worth going to one of those schools once I have my degree and enough money to travel across canada (im in Edmonton)?
They send about 20-25 to the US. UBS LA, CS LA, Goldman, Jefferies, Lazard, JPM, CS SF, ML, Citi etc all recruit for US jobs.
Also, Ivey is the main feeder to canadian banks and boutiques. Think of it as wharton type placement in Canada. So you add it all together and you have a good number of bankers.
We aren't talking all US BB placement, that's more limited.
There is a post earlier about a guy at CS NY that was top analyst in all of New YOrk for CS From Ivey (he is the only CS guy going to Blackstone). One of the top guys at TMT (goldman) was Ivey too.
Disclaimer: I am Canadian, went to Wharton, at a tier 1 BB (think GS/MS)- was looking at ivey before I got into Wharton.
^where did you go for your undergrad and what work experience did you have for Wharton MBA.
thats very impressive if Ivey sends more than 50 people to Ibanking,is that MBA or undergrad placements?
