Background check troubles - incoming FT

Pretty stupid looking back, but I basically got flagged for a period of unemployment between my high school ending and matriculation. I indicated I was unemployed (because I mostly was) but when I was bored I went to work part time working the cashier and flipping burgers. I got asked to clarify what I did in this period and I just said I was working part-time sometimes, but does this count as withholding information?

I'm waiting for an update from the 3rd party agency for now, but I'm genuinely worried because I did not intend to withhold information. I don't even have my payslips for that part time job anymore...

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems you're in a gray area, but it's not necessarily a dealbreaker. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Clarification vs. Withholding Information:

    • If you were asked to clarify what you did during that period and you mentioned working part-time, you’ve already disclosed the key detail. Withholding information would imply intentionally hiding or lying about it, which doesn’t seem to be the case here.
    • Employers and background check agencies are generally more concerned with verifying major employment gaps or discrepancies in your stated timeline, not minor part-time jobs.
  2. Payslips and Verification:

    • Not having payslips for a part-time job from years ago is common and unlikely to raise significant red flags. Most background checks focus on verifying full-time roles or internships relevant to your career path.
    • If the agency asks for further proof, you can explain that it was a casual part-time job, and records may not be available. Honesty and transparency are key.
  3. Next Steps:

    • Wait for the update from the 3rd party agency. If they request additional details, provide as much as you can, but don’t stress over minor gaps or part-time work.
    • If asked, you can frame it as: "During that period, I was primarily preparing for college but took on a part-time job to stay productive and earn some extra money." This shows initiative and responsibility.
  4. General Advice:

    • For future reference, always aim to be consistent in your resume and verbal explanations. Even small discrepancies can cause unnecessary stress during background checks.

It’s unlikely this will derail your full-time offer, so stay calm and be ready to clarify if needed. Good luck!
