Background/Interests - What is appropriate to share?

I work in investment banking in Europe, but my MD has recently offered me the opportunity to move to investment banking in the U.S. with an internal transfer as he is well-connected to our U.S. MD's.

The U.S. MD has requested that my MD share my "background and interests". However, other than my resume what would be appropriate to share? I am thinking of writing one or two paragraphs that my MD could attach but I am not sure what it should consist of that is not already available in my resume.

I hope you can provide some insight.

Typically the final line of your resume will be interests where you’ll list 3-4 of your hobbies.

What you list should be able to spark a conversation and not be generic. Just listing “Reading, Traveling, Sports” is essentially communicating “I am a template human being”.

Of course, make them work appropriate.

Example of interests that might be considered inappropriate for work include:
- Armed robbery
- Rape
- Homicide
- Human Trafficking
- Drug Trafficking
- Amateur Pornography
- Professional Pornography

With all of this in mind, just write on your resume 3 or 4 cool things you do or learn about for fun that others would relate to or that would prompt others to ask you about them.

Thank you for your feedback.

Currently I have a section that is written as: Activities/Interests: Traveling, visiting museums, playing football, collecting paintings (particularly realism/naturalism) and participating in case competitions; Winning XXX, placing top 3 in XXX and top 3 in XXX.

I just feel like I should write something more personal in the e-mail about myself that isn't a list of things I like.

I would reword your interests section and make it more specific. Traveling is way too general. What kind of museums? If you put a specific historical period or something like that, your interviewer will probably ask you about out of curiosity. Also, put case competitions on their own line if they're at all business/career related, that is not a hobby.

The interests line is one of the most looked at on your resume, especially in the US. Your hobbies are good, just word them better
