Bank of America Group Placement Process

Hey everyone,

I'm an incoming IB SA26 and was just wondering what the group placement process looks like. Heard it kicks off in the upcoming fall semester and that it's a pretty brutal process with 6 hours of interviews on a given day.

Do we start networking with people in the groups we want to be in? Do we need to study technicals for them? How should we approach it?

Any help is super appreciated - thanks so much!

The Bank of America (BoA) group placement process for summer analysts typically involves networking and preparation well before the official placement begins. Here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Networking:

    • Yes, you should start networking with people in the groups you're interested in as early as possible. This helps you build relationships and gain insights into the group dynamics, culture, and expectations.
    • Reach out to current analysts and associates in your target groups. Introduce yourself, express your interest in their group, and ask thoughtful questions about their work and team.
  2. Technical Preparation:

    • While technicals may not be the primary focus during group placement, it's always a good idea to brush up on your technical knowledge. Some groups may value candidates who demonstrate strong technical skills, especially for highly competitive teams like M&A or LevFin.
    • Be prepared to discuss your understanding of the group's focus area and how your skills align with their needs.
  3. Approach to Placement:

    • Placement typically begins with HR providing a deck or materials outlining the different groups, their focus areas, and contact information for networking.
    • Webinars or Q&A sessions may be held where groups present themselves. Use these opportunities to learn more and refine your preferences.
    • After networking and gathering information, you'll likely rank your group preferences. Some groups may conduct informational interviews or additional assessments to gauge fit.
  4. Timeframe:

    • The process often kicks off in the fall semester, so start preparing and networking early. The earlier you connect with people in your target groups, the better your chances of standing out.
  5. Key Tips:

    • Avoid asking about sensitive topics like hours or return rates during networking calls.
    • Focus on understanding the group's responsibilities, typical assignments, and what makes a successful intern in their team.
    • Demonstrate genuine interest and enthusiasm for the group while showcasing your fit and skills.

Remember, the process is competitive, especially for popular groups like M&A, LevFin, and Healthcare. Networking strategically and preparing thoroughly will give you an edge. Good luck!
