BB'S AND MBA ASSISTANCE

HI GUYS!

As an aspiring IB (hopefully at a BB in NYC) I would really like to know do these BBs help in getting an MBA? Perhaps some financial assistance? Also, what would those who are currently employed recommend, to get work as an analyst and then get an MBA or just stay with the firm for a promotion? Another question I have is lets say I work as GS, I've been an analyst for 2 years and now am an associate year 1. I plan to get my MBA after completing my 3 years at GS. When I reapply to all the BB's after getting an MBA will I start off as an associate year 1 or year 2 since I've already had year 1 experience? WIll GS hire me back? is there any way to have a re-employment deal before leaving to get my MBA so I know I have a secured job?

Thank you!

You will start as a post-MBA AS 1 after completing your program, even if you had prior IB experience and upgrade to a bigger firm. Investment banks do not pay for you to get your MBA in this day and age, even if a couple of them might have decades ago. GS won’t pay for you to take a 2 year vacation and return with no additional skills, even if you return with a “network” of former teachers and big 4 accountants. Consulting firms however will pay for you to get your MBA and let you return with a promotion, because the art of bullshitting around for 2 years without building any discernible skills or delivering any kind of value is highly relevant to a consulting career.

  • As others have said, don't really need MBA to go to associate but a bank would absolutely take you back if you decided to go, not to mention you would be a top banking candidate out of MBA if you already had analyst experience. You'd lose 2 years of experience/salary.
  • Many EBs and BBs pay MASSIVE scholarship bonuses to diversity candidates - I'm talking the full cost of 2nd year (~100k) plus the normal sign-on bonus of 50 - 70k. I am sure that you could secure this kind of scholarship if you really wanted to go back to that bank.

It's a pretty tough decision. If IB doesn't play out for me I wanted an MBA for other jobs, but on the other hand, I don't want to start as a y1 associate again. What counts as a diverse student? I'm a Pakistani. Am I diverse? Is the bonus paid after we return as an incentive to keep that employee?

Analyst 1 in IB-M&A

Diverse is black/Hispanic/lgbt/woman. Pakistani or any type of Asian doesn't count and in fact makes it harder to break in. The signing bonus is given to everyone as a sweetener, MBA or not. You can still go into IB and get an mba but don't expect any special treatment, only consulting gets you that.

Wrong - only Asian men are ORM. Asian women can in fact get the diversity bonus as I have seen in my year and earlier classes of BB mba recruits. If you are a woman it is exceedingly easy to get into IB through a top 20 mba program.
