Best groups at Moelis NY?
Which groups in the Moelis NY office are known for better deal flow or group culture? Are the hours as rough across all of them or are any known to be lighter?

Moelis analysts are generalists and they all generally hate their lives. If you don’t wanna grind till 2-3am constantly in a sharp elbows type place, MoCo ain’t for you. If you don’t mind that type of shit then go for it, their analysts do very well after exiting.
Have found that to be the opposite. Moelis was much less sharp elbowed and more collaborative than other banks that my friends work at. Yes there are nights where you are up working until 3am but generally found the hours to be in line with the street and even less than some places (GS, Laz, Jeff, etc.)
It’s because everyone at the analyst level generally has good exits and everyone at the associate level makes good money. Then with seniors the one p&l comp model (i.e they don’t a flat % of fees brought in) means no reason to box people out of deals to guard fee share. So culturally there’s no incentive for anyone to be sharp elbowed.
Hours are definitely on the bad end but I don’t think it’s uniquely worse than other banks like it used to be. Protected time enforcement has been pretty respectable. Not perfect (they never are) but pretty solid
Can attest to this. Nicest person I knew in finance is an ex-MoCo banker.
What do you imagine the relationship between group culture and deal flow is?
More deal flow = MDs really love to get in the weeds and can’t stand anyone else touching their materials ?
Most groups are fine. TMT and HC services grind.
Would also add Restructuring - Moelis was on some landmark mandates this cycle (Hertz, AMC, JCPenny, etc.), as well as advising on the Air Cargo portion of the CARES Act last year. Believe that was handeled by the Rx team and most of that should be out of NY.
Moelis is generalist, so each office runs their rx and the coverage teams = the m&a teams = the rx team (every analyst is generalist). So there isn’t a dedicated “rx” team in the same way (some more senior individuals VPs and MDs specialize in rx at Moelis but analysts and associates don’t)
This is true in theory but not really true in practice - most RX is run out of NY and there might be another coverage analyst on a deal if there’s a dedicated coverage team (Ie O&G - Houston or even seen it with other industries out of the NY office)
Also practically one can align themselves with certain groups even if the program is technically generalist, so one can wind up doing mostly group X work if they want to and are liked that group
Just figured worth mentioning since the OP is probably more junior and is asking about “best” groups
Any insight on Capital Solutions? Typical exit opps?
Strong pipeline to JPMC branch manager roles in Anchorage
New team, so won't be any exits yet. Combined ECM/DCM platform, could be cool if interested in markets.
best group is the one that sent an email at 3am asking where all the analysts were
For historical accuracy, was 12:30am and it was the 1st year analyst staffer - Ie all analysts are generalist
It is still a legitimate questions as staffers will try it out you on deals in your preferred group
Healthcare and life sciences group is good
Lol
u dont agree? why do I feel like I hear "healthcare" as a top group at like every bank.
If I'm not mistaken, Moelis does actually have a dedicated team for healthcare, but I heard that team is grinded harder than most other deal teams at the firm.
HC Services, TMT, Life Sciences / Pharma are some of the most heinous groups on the street. A&D is really good for WLB, but they don't do deals. Because you're generalist you can def find places to hide but most groups are pretty bad...
**Coming from someone who knows several analysts well
can you elaborate on the tmt group at moelis ny?
It’s effective dissolved now. Only thing left is tech from the svb “acquisition” in 2023
Which groups at Moelis will provide you with the best deal experience (i.e., minimal coverage and maximum probability of closed deals)?
