Best Teams to go from Australian Big 4 corp/insto banking to IB

Hi All,

Currently recruiting IB SA but have an insto grad role in hand for next year as a backup. Were there any particular teams people think would be best to target/they have seen others move from into IB?

LevFin is something I'm very keen on (even within the bank itself, probs the only role I would be willing to stay in and not move to an IB for), but if I'm unable to do that what other options would there be? I was also interested in project finance and corp dev M&A.

If anyone else were able to note any areas of insto which have transferrable skills to IB, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on transitioning from Australian Big 4 corporate/institutional banking to Investment Banking (IB):

Teams to Target for Transition to IB:

  1. Leveraged Finance (LevFin):

    • Highly relevant and transferable skills to IB.
    • Focuses on high-yield debt and leveraged buyouts, which are core components of many IB transactions.
  2. Project Finance:

    • Involves structuring and financing large infrastructure projects.
    • Skills in financial modeling, risk assessment, and deal structuring are highly valued in IB.
  3. Corporate Development (Corp Dev) M&A:

    • Directly related to mergers and acquisitions, a significant part of IB.
    • Experience in deal execution, valuation, and strategic planning is highly transferable.

Other Areas with Transferable Skills:

  1. Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A):

    • Provides strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of financial statements.
    • Skills in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling are useful in IB.
  2. Credit Risk Analysis:

    • Involves assessing the creditworthiness of borrowers, which is crucial in many IB roles.
    • Skills in risk assessment and financial analysis are applicable.
  3. Treasury:

    • Manages the company's liquidity, investments, and risk.
    • Experience in cash management, financial risk management, and capital markets can be beneficial.

Additional Tips:

  • Networking: Leverage your current role to build connections within the IB industry.
  • Skill Development: Focus on enhancing your financial modeling, valuation, and deal structuring skills.
  • Certifications: Consider obtaining relevant certifications such as CFA or completing courses related to IB.

By targeting these areas and developing the necessary skills, you can increase your chances of successfully transitioning from a corporate/institutional banking role to investment banking.

The EBs / Boutiques generally hire from Big 4 Corp Fin teams; the big IBs generally hire grads / laterals / from aforementioned EBs and boutiques

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible, but I guess what it comes down to is the competition.

Does Big 4 Insto get you M&A reps? Not really, so then you might need to know somebody

Feel free to DM me if you want

CIB at big 4 normally has industry coverage teams and product teams. Sometimes there will be a very small m&a / advisory team. DCM and securitization are 1:1 in terms of experience (big 4 are actually really strong in that space). ECM the big 4 aren't normally the lead so that's sub par experience. Lev fin and project finance are probably your best shots. But my understanding (I went through this years ago) is you don't get much choice on these grad programs. I networked really hard internally and got great feedback so I could do a rotation in m&a / advisory.
