Between a Rock and a Hard Place for SA 2026 Recruiting

Just for some context, I'm a sophomore at a non target. I first found out about IB a couple weeks before the start of the 2024-2025 school year, and I have been preparing ever since. My school doesn't consistently send people to IB (most people would rather opt for WM here), but we've had some alumni who have great spots at top BBs or PE firms. When I first found out what IB was, I weighted grinding technicals over networking, and recently it has been the opposite. I've also visited NYC once so far to have some coffee chats with people I have already connected with. Around Oct., I landed a pretty decent SA position at a PE firm for 2025 (while not directly IB, I'm sure it'll provide lots of valuable experience for the deal process).

Things have been fine so far, but the recruiting timeline feels incredibly fast. I was expecting it to be accelerated compared to other industries, but it definitely slapped me in the face. The fact that banks have already opened their apps for 2026 has given me virtually no time to gain work experience, and it still feels like I have more networking to do. I was thinking I could try to grab an off-cycle internship in order to put more meat on the table, but it doesn't seem like it would make much of a difference.

I've been thinking about it for a while, and I haven't found a solution. Does anyone have any tips that might've completely flown over my head? Or do I just dump SA recruiting for 2026 altogether in order to find a more effective, alternative path to IB? Any kind of feedback is greatly appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a strategy to navigate your situation:

  1. Leverage Your PE Internship: While it’s not directly IB, your upcoming PE internship is a strong asset. Highlight the deal experience and transferable skills (e.g., financial modeling, valuation, and transaction exposure) in your applications and networking conversations.

  2. Accelerate Networking: Networking is critical, especially coming from a non-target. Focus on alumni at banks with a history of hiring from your school. Continue scheduling coffee chats and informational interviews, and aim to build relationships with decision-makers or those who can refer you internally.

  3. Target Boutique and MM Banks: Many boutique and middle-market (MM) banks have less rigid recruiting timelines compared to BBs and EBs. They may still have openings later in the cycle, so keep an eye on these opportunities.

  4. Off-Cycle Internships: If you can secure an off-cycle internship, it could strengthen your resume and provide additional IB-specific experience. Even if it’s unpaid or at a smaller boutique, it demonstrates commitment and adds relevant experience.

  5. Prepare for Technicals and Behavioral Questions: While networking is key, don’t neglect technical prep. Banks will expect you to be polished in both technical and behavioral interviews. Use resources like the WSO IB Prep Pack to ensure you’re ready.

  6. Apply Strategically: Even if you feel underprepared, apply to SA 2026 roles. Some banks may still consider candidates with strong networking connections and a compelling story, even if they lack extensive prior experience.

  7. Alternative Pathways: If SA 2026 doesn’t work out, consider full-time recruiting post-graduation. Many banks hire analysts outside the SA pipeline, especially for roles left unfilled by returning interns. Networking and a strong PE internship will be valuable assets in this process.

  8. Stay Persistent: The accelerated timeline can be overwhelming, but persistence is key. Keep networking, applying, and refining your story. Many successful IB professionals faced similar challenges and found their way through determination and adaptability.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that the path to IB isn’t always linear. Your PE internship and proactive networking already set you apart. Keep pushing forward!
