Bocconi BIEF vs Non-Target (Free) for London IB – Worth €100k?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently facing a big decision and would really appreciate some honest advice.
Goal: Break into London Investment Banking (ideally straight after undergrad, no master’s).
Option 1: Bocconi University – BIEF
- Well-known semi-target for London IB
- Strong placement into banks
- International exposure + network
- Cost: ~€90–100k total over 3 years
Option 2: Non-target in my home country (Central Asia)
- Tuition + living = basically free
- No direct pipeline to London IB
- Historically very weak placement:
- Only ~2 people placed into top master’s (LSE/Bocconi) from last year’s graduates
- Tough grading system:
- Avg GPA ~3.0
- Very few students get 3.8–3.9
Path here would be:
Undergrad → Top Master’s (London School of Economics / HEC Paris / etc.) → IB
My family can afford Bocconi, but:
- It would be a major investment
- They likely cannot afford a top-tier master’s afterward
If I choose the non-target:
- My mom is confident we could fund a top master’s later
- But I’m worried about actually getting in given grading + track record
My concerns:
- Is Bocconi “worth it” for London IB vs saving €100k?
- How realistic is breaking into London IB as an international student from Central Asia?
- Is the “non-target → top master’s → IB” path too risky given my uni’s track record?
- Do I need a top master’s anyway, even if I go to Bocconi?
What I’m optimizing for:
- Highest probability of landing London IB
- Preferably without needing a master’s
Would really appreciate thoughts from people who’ve seen both paths or recruited in London.
Thanks in advance.

Key Considerations:

Do you need a top master’s even if you go to Bocconi?
Recommendation:
If your family can afford Bocconi without jeopardizing their financial stability, it’s the safer and more direct route to London IB. The non-target option introduces significant risks, and the reliance on a top-tier master’s adds uncertainty. Bocconi provides a clearer, more reliable path to achieving your goal.
