Book Recommendations

Junior Majoring in Finance & Accounting at a Semi-Target. Interested in IB, PE, Management Consulting. I spend a lot of my free time reading and have indulged in relevant literature. I was looking for book recommendations that would broaden my knowledge on the topics and better prepare me for internships and the professional world.

Best Wishes.

Extreme Ownership — recently heard from my friend (ex-Jefferies VP) he’d make his summer analysts read it. This is more for when you get the position and want to succeed in the team environment.

Jocko is probably my #1 mentor, I’ve read all his books and have listened to countless podcasts.

1 Cover and Move

2 Simple

3 Prioritize and Execute

4 Decentralized Command

Discipline = Freedom. Greatest recommendation, I wish more knew about his work!

No need whatsoever to read any finance literature to prepare.

A couple of books I would recommend ahead of banking though:

- Influence by R Cialdini (#1 book recommended by Charlie Munger)

- Outlive by Peter Attia (to ensure you have the right longevity benchmarks ahead of starting your career)

- Principles by Ray Dalio (to know yourself and improve decision making, may actually help for interviews) - and any other book by Dalio

-Atomic Habits by James Clear (great book)

-The power of now (a bit woo-woo, but great introduction to mindfulness which I highly recommend you get into, or meditation)

Would also add Crucial Conversations to the mix. Really good book.

Going back to my analyst years, it’s clear I could have improved my quality of life with the right dialogue; and as an associate it’s clear that you need to phrase some of your feedback in a way that makes juniors feel safe & respected (while still being honest about performance)
