Boston IB Scene
I know there have been posts on this but nothing recently.
Which are the top shops in Boston and which are the best groups? I know there’s a lot of tech there but is there anything else?
Im asking as an associate and higher. Which firm would be best for a career banker?
Hi Associate 1 in IB - Cov, no, I never sleep and so I can respond to any lonely threads (like this one) at all hours of the night. Impressive, I know ;-)
More suggestions...
Hope that helps.
Off top of my head: RJ, HW, Lazard have Boston offices that do a lot of work. Jefferies and JP morgan have satellite offices. Needham as well. Definitely others though I’m forgetting.
The following have offices in Boston:
HL is out Dedham, MA, not Boston
How big is that office?
I'd add:
Cowen has a software/TMT group (former BMO team) there
Canaccord
Needham & Co.
Svb Leerink does a lot out of that office
UBS also has an office in Boston that does traditional M&A and IPOs.
Aeris and Shea & Co are strong if you are interested in software
Would not sleep on working at citizens. Absurdly good culture in their capital markets group and they pay street
This is accurate - wtf with the MS?!
How would people on here rank these Boston banks? Heard anecdotally that EBs (specifically Moelis) do a lot less interesting stuff out of this satellite office, whereas MMs (specifically HW, Blair) run a lot of good deals through these offices? I assume it’s that the MMs have less of an NYC presence so Boston is a bigger part of the bank. Know at Blair for example the head of tech group is in Boston
Co-head of tech is in Boston. But worth noting, location doesn’t matter for Blair—you get staffed across locations. You’d have the same deal experience across the firm minus just general office culture.
BB&T
Jefferies - Think its just automotive coverage group
Rothschild just opened one apparently
List here is pretty comprehensive. Few other ones that come to mind:
Alantra
AGC (avoid like the plague)
DB (small group of tech bankers - may have closed but was open as recent as summer 20)
Provident (HC boutique)
Honestly would say that the tech and hc scene is pretty solid. Curious if others could comment as well on quality of groups being mentioned? I would hypothesize that Boston banks have better culture compared to NY? This is based on nothing more than networking / friends that have worked at the aforementioned places. Heard from a friend that the Moelis Boston office was rough however.
Oppenheimer too*
