Calling someone "bud" or "buddy"
Am I the only one that thinks this is cringe? Unless you're talking to a 6 year old I guess. Anyone else feel the same/differently?
Fully anticipating some smartass responses to this post haha...

Ok bud
Bud and buddy are the bane of my existence. Unless you’re Canadian or talking to a child, there’s no excuse.
I am Canadian and when someone calls me buddy they get added to the hitlist.
Hit list and Canadian don’t go hand in hand
Canadian here. When I get a "bud" in a professional setting, its either from a hockey / tech bro or condescending.
“Buddy” is attempting to incite violence
Usually it's pretty condescending.
if it’s in third person it’s fine “me and my buddy…”
Worse than this is calling someone “Guy”.
Ok Guy.
Hey Guy.
Guy!
what about "motherfucker"?
It's always a dick move to call someone "Guy".
"Motherfucker" can sometimes be a positive.
<Friend 1 knocks in a 50 foot putt>
<Friend 2: "motherfucker!!">
Think of a context where "Guy" doesn't warrant a slap in the face ok Guy?
How is this any different from saying "man", "bro", etc?
"What's up man" is the exact same as "What's up bud". I think you're referring to the tone in which it's delivered, which certainly makes a difference
yeah it really all depends on the tone but i feel like "buddy" and "bud" can feel a bit more condescending compared to "man" and "bro"
Listen, bud. You're gonna have lots of experiences in life that you don't enjoy, if this is the hardest thing you come across that tests your patience consider yourself lucky. Personally, I laugh when someone tries to speak in a condescending manner because it tells me they feel the need to make me feel inferior to stroke their ego (i.e. they actually view me as a threat).
Take that as you will.
yeah buddy in Minnesota accent
When I was a first year (~15 years ago), I addressed someone a few years older who I liked/looked up to as bud (i.e. "hey, what's up bud?") at a social event in a way that I intended to be friendly/endearing. A few years later, when we were on close terms, he (when very drunk) told me how much it pissed him off, but he realized soon after that it was not intended to be condescending and moved past it because I am just a very casual / non-calculating person. I never even had it on my radar as a term of which to be wary. But alas, it appears to be a landmine for some people.
I call my much younger brother “bud”. If you don’t want to incite violence, stick to calling people “chief” or “hoss”.
the libbies don’t like chief, gotta stick w “boss man” like the eastern european barbers
???????
"is normally $20. but for you my friend, $19.99."
very well, comrade
There's a VP in my office that does this. Honestly not a bad guy, but he was A2A so he's on the younger side...might be overthinking this but assuming he subconsciously does it to flex authority lol
Ok buddy boy
Oh this one is gonna get people murdered
You got it champ
i refer to other friends in conversations as buddy if that counts? like i'll say "yeah my buddy was there" - def is tone-dependent
nah that's totally fine I do that too
"buddy" always triggers me. makes me feel like an infant and the person is inflicting/implying some sort of power imbalance.
boss/champ is just blue collar talk that should be left in the deli at breakfast
Do you use different terms for senior vs junior people?
Its maybe only sort of ok if someone is ~20+ years older than me, even then it's a bit of a wtf
Have a friend that goes 'buddyyyyy' whenever I do something stupid. So yeah tone dependent but not really positive when referring to me lol
I like to be reffeered as (bud/buddy) as my
Pronouns
Ok, Buddy Buddy. We are back in business on Bluestar!
It reminds me of South Park:
Only one guy in my office that I consider very ready to backstab anyone, aka a true snake. Oh, and he calls me "buddy"....
Is “boss” acceptable?
If it's your best friend then it's okay bc you are buddies. But I think you mean the average jo calling you buddy or the guy that came from money. Yeah super weird I just think okay and move on
Get them back and call them “pal”
Better yet, call them “sport”
Depends on who you're talking to really. I don't necessarily appreciate it but I understand 99 times out of 100 its not mean to be malicious in any way. It can come off as somewhat condescending tho -- that's my initial reaction to it.
How should one feel at work when someone junior to you says ‘hey man’
Seems normal
This surprises me. I never had a problem with anyone using buddy or bud with me. Seems like a term of affinity. What is the problem?
What about “pipsqueak” or “champ”?
"Yeahhhhhhh buddyyy" - Ronnie Coleman
Growing up skinny and short, bud, buddy, pain.
Come to SF everyone calls each other "bro"
Cool story bro
only dudes that don't fuck call other guys bud or buddy, end of story
Bud Fox has entered the chat*
So what’s an alternative? Call each person by name is fine. But after a while it’s a bit cold no? So what’s a better term of affinity?
Thanks bud can also be Thanks: man, dude, my man, my guy, *name*, killer, champ... I kid with some obviously lol. I don't mind bud that much and I use it myself (never "buddy") but the alts exist haha
Really? There’s a difference? I didn’t realise buddy or bud was bad but all the alternatives you listed are ok. I haven’t lived in the US since 2005 so my knowledge is clearly dated but I always considered these interchangeable. I default to buddy so I better make an effort to change. My bad.
When you work in middle market M&A in Chicago or Minneapolis you get used to it, bud

"Bud" or "buddy" is so condescending. That's why I call everyone "superchief." This has totally NOT gotten me into multiple bar fights, and I would highly recommend using this one as a sign of respect for your peers.
i only say buddy when at the gym
in the office I prefer to use daddy. when my VP may shit on me I tell him "daddy chill"
Was gonna take shots at this post, but then realized that I indeed, only call 'buddy' when it's a 6 year old or when I'm using it condescendingly, like when I'm confronting someone who cut in line
So many condescinding NE'ers in here saying calling your friends bud or buddy is somehow negative. Let's hear what happens when I call you dude? Because I bet you have no real idea of what that word means either. Down this part of things, bud or buddy isn't even negative in the slightest. The opposite. I mean for fuck's sake I go to the local gin joint and the British bartenders greet me (and my buds) with "hey buds, what's up?" They couldn't give two shits (and it's couldn't btw, not could give less. GRAMMAR you muppets! I learned from them as much as they learned from us).
Sure thing, kiddo
This is Miami Pal, where you can't even tell the players without a program!
All of you who get so rilled up about the use of buddy are likely the lowest performers in your groups. For fucks sake why would you care?
