Can I Continue My Paid Finance Newsletter While in Banking
College senior here who just signed FT at a BB. I write a newsletter (anonymously) that has a mix of paid and free subs and is centered around the intersection of finance and tech. Over the summer I didn't disclose it because time spent on the desk was short and virtual. I am not sure if I want to continue to stay anonymous, but was wondering whether I could write a finance centered newsletter that people pay for, while in banking from a compliance standpoint. tbh I sort of skipped through those compliance presentations which probably had the answer, but my assumption is its no (obviously I would continue to steer clear talking about companies I cover at work). Was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or knows someone who has created paid content (really in any form, Youtube, teachable etc) while in banking and w
For those wondering, I don't make that much $ from it, but I feel like as the content gets better and my marketing efforts improve one day it could become a substantial source of income, thus I really don't want to give it up.
There are, at minimum, two potential conflicts you may want to resolve:
1) You should tell your subscribers/audience that you are employed in the industry. A newsletter or any form of media normally disclose any ownership structures, political affiliations, key donors, employment, potential bias, etc to avoid any misunderstandings. Nobody is saying that your newsletter is not impartial, but putting that out there officially would make everything on the up and up. This is even more relevant if you write about your own employer or key issues that affect your work/your industry.
2) Our HR terms do not say anything about running a newsletter, but they do forbid any staff from writing, speaking, being filmed or communicate about the firm or key industry events without confirming with PR and compliance first. I don't think you'd write about your own firm or job, and that this is more a general industry newsletter. Since you are most likely carrying out research about competitors, the industry as a whole - I would check all documents you have signed or had training for.
Staying anonymous could have advantages in this case, once you disclose this, HR and compliance could create more problems than necessary.
