Can one bad deal / bad experience with toxic VP ruin your reputation?

Hi guys,

First year analyst here, and I need some advice.

Recently, I have not been getting any notable staffing. Beyond some limited pitch material preparation, nothing. Both deals that I am on at the moment are progressing slowly and one of them is very high stakes and so as a first year analyst, there is limited input I can give so the MD and Associate are doing quite a bit and involving me where they think it makes sense.

But as a consequence, I am literally not doing much. There have been days I have sat in the office having quite literally sent less than 10 emails and received around the same.

My concern is that I have gained a reputation of being unreliable and difficult to work with from when I was staffed heavily with a very difficult VP. Earlier in the year, I was staffed on two executions with a fairly scattered VP. These were my first proper executions so, understandably, there were inefficiencies on my part. But in addition, the VP didn't really help the situation when they would check my work, say it was fine to send to counterparties, and then ream me out for using the wrong version, because they didn't save down the file in the deal folder and didn't tell me. Fine, I thought for someone like that I should just spell out what I will do and get them to say okay. So I did, they say yes, and then once again get reamed out and get told that what I did was "obviously not what was expected" when they had ok'd what I had put down (on text for them to see). There's other things where they will have reviewed a piece of work and insist that I am not being diligent or have done something wrong (misspelled a name, get things the wrong order), but when I open the file and cross check against the version they would like it to be matched against (or when I double check the spelling), the errors they are seeing are not there, i.e., they have incorrectly reviewed and are saying I did something that I did not do. When I would ask them to clarify where exactly the mistake is (which they would not be able to do, because there was none), I was told that I was being argumentative.

My concern is, because most of my deal exposure was with this person, and any oversights that I had made whilst learning the process as well as the egregious examples above would have been compounded twice over as I was on two concurrent executions with this person, is that they have spread an incorrect / unrepresentative view of me that has severely hurt my reputation which is leading to me not getting any staffing.

I have not raised this, what I deem to be, toxic and gaslighting behaviour with my manager nor my staffer because I don't think there is any point as I will not be staying in this team anyway (moving to another one soon), but I am growing increasingly concerned that I am "benched" and not contributing. I am obviously not being paid to sit around on WSO or do nothing, this can't be defended from a cost perspective. My manager is too far removed from knowing what actually goes on, our current staffer I don't fully trust, and the previous staffer whom I expressed concern to has left.

So I don't know what to do now. Is it the end of the world if I don't get a lot of staffing in the final month and a bit I am in this team? Can I just start afresh in my new team?

Please advise, I feel like I am at my wits' end.
