Canadian Non-Target unsure how to proceed for SA 2027

Am I in trouble for SA 2027 recruitment?

Context: 3rd year (of 5) at a non target university in a lower mid market city ( think USask/UManitoba/Dalhousie). I'm trying to recruit for SA 2027 roles in IB, and wanted to secure an internship for this summer to help boost my resume. I have a solid GPA, finance clubs, did an internship at a commercial lender last summer.

I made last round for internships at a Big 5 IB off-cycle and a Big 4 M&A role, but got neither. My remaining option is an offer for audit for the summer (local Big 4 office).

My question: as a non-target with limited alumni & contacts in IB, do I stick with the audit role or hold out to try for something in calgary or toronto?

Taking the audit role at a local Big 4 office is a solid move, especially given your current position as a non-target student with limited alumni and contacts in IB. Here's why:

  1. Audit as a Stepping Stone: Many successful transitions into IB have come from Big 4 audit roles. The skills you develop—attention to detail, accounting knowledge, and diligence—are highly transferable to IB. Additionally, being at a Big 4 firm gives you access to internal mobility options (e.g., Transaction Advisory Services or Corporate Finance) and a strong brand name on your resume.

  2. Networking Opportunities: While in the audit role, you can leverage the Big 4 network to connect with professionals in M&A, Corporate Finance, or even alumni who have transitioned to IB. Use LinkedIn extensively to build relationships with people in Calgary, Toronto, or other financial hubs.

  3. Calgary/Toronto Roles: Holding out for a role in Calgary or Toronto without a backup could be risky. The audit role ensures you have a strong foundation and relevant experience to discuss in future interviews. You can still apply for off-cycle roles or network aggressively while working in audit.

  4. Long-Term Strategy: If IB is your ultimate goal, consider the following:

    • Excel in Audit: Build a strong reputation and seek opportunities to work on deals or projects that align with IB skills.
    • GMAT and MBA: If you don’t break into IB directly, a top MBA program can be a great way to pivot into IB as an associate.
    • Lateral Moves: Many have successfully transitioned from Big 4 audit to boutique or mid-market IB firms through networking and demonstrating their transferable skills.

In summary, accepting the audit role is a smart choice for now. It provides stability, a strong brand name, and a platform to build the skills and network needed to break into IB. Simultaneously, keep networking and applying for roles in Calgary or Toronto to maximize your chances.
