Career Advice

Basically I’m trying to weigh out my options to see how much of a chance I have to make it in IBD or PC.

Ideally I get into PC right outta uni, but since i’m non-target, I’ve been trying for IB to then go to PC . My current work experience looks like 1 mid market accounting internship, 1 boutique IB internship.

Just wanted to get some understanding of what type of internships i should target to reach my goals.

I just would love some outside perspective of where I am at, very stressed since I really want to achieve my goals. Cheers

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

Current Work Experience:

  • Mid Market Accounting Internship
  • Boutique IB Internship
  • Incoming Big 4 Deal Advisory SA 2025

Academic and Extracurricular Profile:

  • 3.7 CGPA
  • Varsity Sport + Canadian National Team
  • Student Society Finance Team
  • Case Competition Finance Team

Goals:

  • Primary Goal: Get into Private Equity (PE) right out of university.
  • Secondary Goal: Use Investment Banking (IB) as a stepping stone to PE.

Recommendations for Internships:

  1. Winter 2025 Co-op Term:

    • Target: Another boutique IB or a mid-market IB firm. This will help solidify your IB experience and make you a stronger candidate for summer analyst positions.
    • Alternative: Consider a role in a PE firm if possible, even if it's a smaller or less well-known firm. This direct experience can be invaluable.
  2. Summer Analyst 2026:

    • Target: Aim for a top-tier IB firm (Bulge Bracket or Elite Boutique). This experience is highly regarded and will significantly boost your chances of transitioning to PE.
    • Alternative: If you can't secure a top-tier IB role, consider a strong mid-market IB or a reputable PE internship.

Additional Tips:

  • Networking: Continue to network aggressively. Leverage your current internships and extracurricular activities to build connections in both IB and PE.
  • Skill Development: Focus on developing technical skills relevant to IB and PE, such as financial modeling and valuation. Utilize resources like the WSO Financial Modeling Resources and Excel Resources.
  • Resume and Interview Prep: Make sure your resume is polished and tailored for IB and PE roles. Consider using WSO's Resume Reviews by Professionals and Mock Interviews with Pros to prepare.

Stress Management:

  • Perspective: Remember that many successful professionals in IB and PE come from non-target schools. Your strong GPA, extracurriculars, and work experience are significant assets.
  • Balance: While it's important to be ambitious, ensure you maintain a healthy balance to avoid burnout. Your involvement in sports and other activities can be a great way to manage stress.

By targeting the right internships and continuing to build your network and skills, you'll be well-positioned to achieve your goals in IB and eventually transition to PE. Good luck!
