CC/SEAS Students: what do you think of Columbia GS?

Especially for those on the recruiting side of things, how are each of Columbia’s four undergraduate schools perceived? How significant are the differences from school to school? Does GS have any strong candidates? Do you auto ding GS?

Columbia Alum here.OCR is accessible to all. However in terms of networking and interviewing, you'll still see CC/SEAS analysts implicitly be biased against GS students if they don't have a good story or arent military veterans. Everyone knows GS has an insanely high acceptance rate, and even though it isn't explicitly said, people judge those who took a gap year to do fuck all just to get into GS. Obviously that's different if you served in the military, competed/ trained for the Olympics or are a nontrad that grinded their way to an Ivy. But if you used GS as a backdoor, it's pretty obvious. For those people, I would say it's comparable to how people mentally bucket a candidate from Harvard and one from Emory. There's a reason why CC students and SEAS students are recommended to list: "Columbia University - Columbia College" or "Columbia University - School of Engineering and Applied Sciences" on their resumes. However, at the end of the day, the difference is truly negligible. I believe at one point, all the Columbia analysts at Moelis were GS alumni/military vets (one has since left for Dyal and another to Carlyle)

Like a 30 year old who didn't have a college education, decided to do community college for a year, got great grades/extracurriculars and then transferred to GS.

I say this because a substantial amount of the GS population are 19 year olds who took a gap year played a shit ton of video games or did nothing and then became eligible for GS admissions.

So you’d say that if a candidate doesn’t have a fluffy background, has strong grades from a prior institution, and has a legitimate reason for a break in their education, they would fit in the same bucket as CC/SEAS?
