Citi Tech SF Superday Help

Hello Everyone,

I have an upcoming superday with Citi and their Tech SF team. I'd love to get your advice and insights into the team and group.

For those wondering, this was not diversity and was through early West Coast target school process.

Thanks everyone!

Based off networking with people in the group over this past semester, not personally the biggest fan of their SF Tech group due to the lack of deal flow and exits, as the SF tech space is pretty much the big three and then others clawing for the rest with Citi not at the top of that pile. But as a firm in general, am a big fan of Citi's committment to employees and everyone seemed pretty chill.

How did it go? What were qs like and when do you think Ull hear back

Also do you think there will be another Superday for ppl like me who have applied a bit later ?

I interviewed here last year - did not get the offer. Here's the structure of the interview:

  • 1-hour case study right away; you will present it later on, so take good notes (know basic accretion dilution calculations for this).

  • 6 1on1 interviews (two are technical with one harder one).

  • One interview with a director, the rest were either associates or analysts, so focus on fit and getting to know them.

For technicals, some questions that I remember are:

  • Be sure to know your IRR tables / how to solve something like "you triple'd your money in four years, what's the IRR" on paper or in your head.

  • How does increasing leverage impact EV in a DCF (understand if you're already at the optimal capital structure or not)?

  • What ways can a sponsor increase returns (growth, leverage, margins, etc.)?

As for behaviorals, some I remember are:

  • How does the interest you listed on your resume apply to IB?

  • Why BB vs. boutique?

  • You realize you made a mistake halfway through a meeting with a client, what do you do?

  • What is your most relevant resume experience to IB?

Some other notes:

  • The single most important thing about this interview is selling that you're interested in TECH. You probably won't be explicitly asked in your interview about "why tech", but you need to find a way to work it into your story and answers. For example, if they ask "why Citi", lead with "Well, I really want to do tech IB why is why I'm interested in this group..."

  • This group does in-house M&A, which is a big selling point and is unique for tech coverage.

  • The interview was like 80% resume based, so brush up on each bullet.

They always go earlier than everyone and I think people use their interviews as a practice. Personally know at least a couple people who have gotten offers from Citi this year and in past years that get the offer and then decline it after not being able to accelerate other processes - kind of using it as a validation of their preparation.
