Cloud Computing Finance Primer
Hi All, Im trying to put together a initiatic coverage for one of my classes. I was having some difficulty on getting information on the cloud computing industry. Any one come across a primer? Or source of information. I've taken a look at several databases the school provides (S&P, Capital IQ, etc) Any help would be great.
Kevin
Hi Kevin, Though the post is not new, I was wondering if you found any interesting information? I was looking into the development of the cloud technology and found there all sorts of cool cloud database services available (for example, what I linked), I thought to write a post about it in relation of financial services so if you have any good information source to share that would really great. Thanks, Milly
It's not quite clear to me what either of you are exactly looking for. There are a lot of components to what makes up the "cloud". There are cloud hosts, cloud service providers, and companies delivering solutions through the cloud.
Managed hosting companies like Equinix and Rackspace are "cloud" providers and now Apple (iCloud) and MSFT (Azure) are heading in that direction. These companies are enabling businesses (consumers in Apple's case) to move away from needing data centers or on-site storage. They enable moving data storage to the cloud.
Unified communications/managed services companies playing at the convergence of tech and telecom are cloud companies. IP telephony and a number of other similar and associated services are said to be delivered through the cloud.
SaaS companies that are providing business services are offering cloud solutions.
Looking at companies under each of these 3 areas of cloud computing should start giving you an idea of the ecosystem.
this reminded me of a whitepaper i read about the economics of cloud computing...below is the link to the paper. I was apparently written by 2 corp strat guys at Microsoft.

BAML has a good series, think there are 3 parts (maybe 4 now?) - Cloud Wars - that elaborates a lot more on this. See if you can find it through your preferred source of equity research.
S&P puts out industry specific research reports quarterly, they'll probably touch on cloud computing, but give links on elsewhere for further research
Larry ellison defines cloud computing:
Distinctio doloremque quidem iusto. Perferendis tenetur ea facilis nam modi incidunt. Sunt eos accusamus occaecati ut. Debitis in optio dolor totam ad omnis ad.
