College selection

If I go to UMich but major in STEM, am I viewed as a candidate by finance companies the same way as someone in the business school, given I taught myself the finance technicals?

Or do I have to have a minor or double major with the business school?

If you do not have a finance internship or studying finance/accounting/econ then you are not going to be viewed as the same caliber of candidate as someone who studies those subjects and/or have relevant experience. If you have an undergrad degree in STEM and got an MBA, then you would be viewed as a viable candidate for sure. Not to say that you won't get any interviews, but you will be at an inherent disadvantage to candidates who studied business.

For undergrad?

Gather relevant internships and have a true and believable story to explain your why. Should not be a problem. From what I have seen, engineers make good bankers.

But if you fail to gather the internships then it is going to put you at a disadvantage like the guy above mentioned.
