constant rejection

I’ve had 4 superdays this past week..got rejected from 1 and haven’t heard boo from the other 3. I thought I aced my technicals and thought I had a great convo with everyone in terms of fit and culture and behaviorals. I’m getting really down on myself because I have the skills, 3.82 GPA and leadership experience, but I’m getting no offers after my superdays. Like what’s wrong with me...I’m stressing because I feel like recruiting is almost over and I know IB or PE is what I want. What can I do?

Hang in there. At least you have had an interview. I’ve applied for the past two months and not even a single interview yet. It’s demoralizing

People from my school had to work in other jobs and were fine. They actually liked what they do anyway.

If you compare yourself to someone who has never had the opportunity to go to college because they had to stay at home and support their family, or live in severe poverty in another country, you have it way better. Try to find your passion of what you want to do. Have you deeply considered what you really want your future to look like in IB? Do you know about the hours, and that getting accepted and going to your “dream” job could just lead to more challenge and getting fucked over by a boss. I have heard Wall Street careers described as literally a “fire hose” turned on full blast. Always consider if the money is worth it and if it is your passion. Otherwise, there is so much more out there that you might like even better. Be creative and find it.

It's all a numbers game. Take an honest look at your performance and identify areas you think you could improve on (technicals, connecting with the interviewer, asking good questions, telling a compelling story, etc.). If you think you are hitting on all of those than just keep doing what you are doing and something will stick.

My EB invites like 150 students to superdays to fill like 30-40 spots so going 0 for 4 isn't an uncommon result.

I had first round with 15 banks, BB, EB, MM, you name it, superday from a handful, 0 offer. This happened across the span of 2 months, so you can imagine the depression and despair I went through knowing that a whole year of preparation failed me...but I didn't give up, reflected on myself and landed #16-#17. Granted, neither is BB or top EB, but still legitimate industry boutiques that aren't regional gigs. The point is to never give up, I'm sure you heard it countless times, but really, never give up. Here's exactly what you can do: Apply to every single investment bank listing on sites like Indeed, apply for any bank you know that is left, and I know Oppenheimer is about to start so maybe that one. If this year don't work, do a corporate M&A gig which was my fall back plan then come back full time recruiting next year. But hey, very possible that you'll hear back late, especially this late in the cycle banks have odd schedules. Good luck!

It is a numbers game but it is also a story game. I spoke with my interviewer after an offer (took a very long time to get here I assure you) and was told I was chosen (no finance background) over applicants who have done prior internships relevant to the role. Therefore, they aren't always seeking the cookie-cutter background. However, I wasn't shooting for the top GS/JPM firms so that might be different.

It sucks, but keep pushing and maybe change your story if you think it can be improved. Good luck! And name doesn't matter if you want the role in investment banking. Name only matters for those seeking prestige.
