Corporate Banking SA -> FT Investment Banking Analyst

Hi guys,

I'm just looking to get some advice on how to best position myself for FT IB recruiting this summer. For context, I go to a non-target with a 3.9 GPA (will be bumped a couple points after this semester) and a Big Four audit internship along with a real estate operations-type role at a MF (KKR/Carlyle/Apollo).

I will be doing a C&IB internship at a pretty good MM bank this summer. The coverage group I'll be on has elements of corporate and IB work since their IB team will be running once I'm there in the summer, which I plan on hopefully going to FT if not another bank.

Apart from trying to network as much as I can from now until I hit the desk with other banks, what can I do to position myself best for the IB team internally and other banks for FT recruiting?

To position yourself effectively for FT IB recruiting, here’s a strategic breakdown based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Maximize Your Internship Experience:

    • Treat your C&IB internship as an extended interview. Go above and beyond in your role, demonstrating strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude.
    • Build relationships with the IB team at your MM bank. Express your interest in transitioning to IB full-time and seek opportunities to assist with IB-related tasks during your internship.
    • Request feedback regularly to show your commitment to growth and improvement.
  2. Leverage Your Non-Target Background:

    • Your 3.9 GPA is a standout factor. Highlight it prominently on your resume and in conversations.
    • Use your Big Four audit and MF real estate experience to showcase your diverse skill set and ability to handle complex financial analysis.
  3. Networking:

    • Start networking immediately. Reach out to alumni, professionals at other banks, and your current colleagues. Focus on building genuine relationships rather than just asking for referrals.
    • Use informational interviews to learn about other banks’ cultures and recruitment processes. This will help you tailor your applications and interviews.
    • Stay in touch with contacts you make during your internship, especially those in IB roles.
  4. Prepare for Technical and Behavioral Interviews:

    • Dedicate time to mastering technical skills. Use resources like the WSO IB Interview Guide to ensure you’re ready for any technical questions.
    • Practice behavioral questions to craft compelling stories about your experiences. Focus on teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership examples.
  5. Position Yourself Internally:

    • Make it clear to your managers and mentors during your internship that your ultimate goal is to transition to IB. Seek their advice and support.
    • Volunteer for projects or tasks that align more closely with IB work, such as financial modeling or pitchbook preparation.
  6. Timing and Applications:

    • Start applying for FT IB roles early. Many banks begin recruiting in the summer, so have your resume and cover letters ready.
    • Tailor your applications to highlight your relevant experience and your strong academic performance.
  7. Leverage Your MM Bank’s Reputation:

    • If your MM bank has a strong reputation, use it to your advantage. Highlight the skills and experience you’re gaining there when networking and interviewing.

By excelling in your internship, networking strategically, and preparing thoroughly for interviews, you’ll position yourself strongly for FT IB recruiting. Good luck!
