Debt Advisory Study/Modeling Practice

Hi everyone,

My IB prep and work so far has been fairly standard, focusing mainly on valuation methodologies (both intrinsic and extrinsic), accounting, and related tasks. However, an MD recently suggested I brush up on some debt advisory concepts, and I’m unsure where to start.

The areas I was specifically advised to explore include:

  • Debt Capacity & Credit Ratios
  • Ratings Advisory
  • Capital Structure and Debt Instruments: Familiarizing myself with different types of debt (e.g., senior secured loans) and their strategic uses.

I’d also welcome guidance on:

  • Best practices for credit analysis and applying these concepts in practice.
  • How to approach DCF and 3-statement modeling with a debt-focused lens, particularly integrating debt schedules, interest expense, and leverage into valuation.

If anyone has resources (technical guides, frameworks, etc.), tips, or practical insights, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
