I would only say NY since you can live near the office or in relatively a close spot near the office in the same state so if you ever have late nights, you can just uber home or take the sub back.

for NJ the last train for the transit I believe is like 12 am or 1 am, not too sure because never took it. But, if you will be staying at the office past like 8/9 pm or something the trains will stop running express, so they will stop at every stop and make the trip(s) longer.

however, NJ is relatively cheaper than NY at the end of the day.

Best bang for your buck is gonna be in Brooklyn specifically near the L train stops in the neighborhoods Bushwick or Williamsburg, easy efficient commute in the AM and you get more space and cheaper rent. Also nice bc it allows you to have some separation from the office so you're not surrounded by people you see in the office at every waking moment when you step out of the apartment/office.  If you wanna live closer in Manhattan you can do the traditional Murray hill or Kipps bay but just know that you are gonna pay a lot more for a crappy area imo and there's limited public transit (you will have to walk abt 10 or so minutes to the 6 train which always has issues) there's also midtown east and hells kitchen but don't live in jersey bc u can get double taxed on your income if you don't meet the criteria for a credit

I think LIC works better for you. Not too bad of a commute, cheaper, and newer accomodation. The downside is it is sleepier but it sounds like you are already settled so should be fine.

This actually looked really well placed but it was relatively on the expensive side (on Zillow at least) - any specific areas/buildings I could look at in LIC?

To be completely honest, since it seems the upper bound of your budget is USD 3.5k a month, you're going to be much better off looking in Jersey along the Path train and taking it to 33rd street (which is by Empire State).

You'll be shocked at how "cramped" the 1 bedroom options in Bk will be in the USD 3-3.5k a month price range. So its sounding like you'd be better off in a 2 bedroom.

Thanks, kind of makes sense. What may be the commute time from JC to midtown?

Don't the banks provide expensed Uber for getting back home past a particular time? (I definitely do not want to ask the HR that question just yet lol)

I haven’t heard of a BB in NYC that doesn’t expense Ubers at night they just have different cut off times as to after when that is allowed

Did you not use it during your time as an SA at this bank? Or are you just signing on for FT after not having done an internship there?

Also, and forgive me for asking, you're doing IBD right? Your question just surprised me lol.

Re: how long the commute time is...

Into Google Maps, I just punched a random address about a 12 minute walk from the Journal Square Path stop to the Empire State Building and it estimates the commute at 43 minutes. It's going to be around that Path stop that you're gonna be able to find those spacious 1 bedrooms/2 bedrooms with a washer dryer in unit for under USD 3.5k a month.

It is not about affordability, we don't want to spend too much money on rent. Quite honestly I think we are just benchmarking against our current accomodation. We live in a HCOL area (not NY), but pay ~$3k for a super nice accomodation.

But I understand NY is different and we may eventually have to bump up to $4k if we want everything
