I thought it was pretty good. It was very well directed, had some great editing, and great shots of New York City. The story was so-so, but it's Wall Street. The acting was great, especially Michael Douglas. It seemed awkward at times, such as when Bud Fox makes a cameo..actually it was very awkward. It had some really good scenes as well as some great dialogue at times. It's very over-the-top at times(when Shia breaks off in Japanese mid-sentence when speaking to investors).I recommend it though!

@eyelikecheese did you really think the editing was great, i'm hoping you are being sarcastic...it had the editing of a cartoon turned live-action movie. Did anyone say wtf when he was on the phone in the car and his coworker appears in a bubble? I don't even know where to start, just when I thought "oh i might not be that bad" Douglas had stopped talking and then something awkward happened again.

I had to come home and watch the original just to feel better.

I definately thought a lot of it was rather retarted ( lebuff speaking chinese), but overall it was not that bad of a movie, I mean it doesent compare to the original, the original was very raw, but I would not say that it sucked to the point to where you should not see it. It was average at best and fairly entertaining.

I had so much expectations going in, because I read the script back in February, but they changed everything. I was so disappointed that I came home after and watched the first one.

Score: B/C+, Watch it but see it on dvd.

Pros: 1) Michael Douglas reprising his role as Gekko. Not as epic as the first movie, but still excellent. Portrayed a little more evil than I would have liked, but still human. Stone manages to craft him as a man still tetering on the edge of morality, who can't quite change what he is but is human in his flaws. I can appreciate that.

2) Technical directing: Manages to capture the chaos of wall street, even if it gets a bit mellodramatic at points. Costumes, sets and shots of new york were generally well done, adding to a theme of excess and prosperity.

3) Actor selection: Carrie Mulligan, Frank Langella, James Brolin, all great in their roles although would have appreciated a good deal more depth with all of them. Shia wasn't too bad either although his character seemed too random at times. Still, it's inherently Gekko's movie, so all of this is understandable.

Cons:

1) Mellodrama: Way too mellodramatic at points. Everything seemed on the verge of collapse all the time. While it may have been appropriate for some of the stock market scenes, it got a bit annoying towards the end when nearly every moment tried to add some unnecessary intensity. At some points, it was like a really diluted version of an indian soap opera.

2) Politics: Oliver Stone's a very liberal guy, and although I disagree with him, I'm all right with him expressing his views. Still, I don't like my narratives diluted with a healthy dose of propoganda. There were points when I felt he was downright didactic.

3) Very random story: It's really just the amalgamation of a bunch of subplots that somehow result in a happy ending. The question of why the fuck did he do this comes into your head a lot as you're watching it. There are plenty of plot holes, which I can't reveal without too many spoilers. It has it's enjoyable points, but don't expect an amazing narrative here.

It's no secret Oliver Stone made this movie just to make a sequel. The critics haven't exactly celebrated it and I'm no different. Having watched wall street again only the day before, I can I was disappointed with somethings and all right with others. It's a flawed story about a flawed man living a flawed life. The Gekko we ( well at least I once loved) isn't totally there, but he isn't totally gone either. He's developed, I just don't totally like the development. If you loved the original wall street, I think this is still worth checking out, but do so when it comes out on dvd / torrent.

Save your shekels guys this movie was BAD. Shia was the douche I hoped he would be. His GF was so hideous I couldn't look at her any longer. Come on there were much prettier girls that were extras in that movie. In fact Bud Fox's Asian gf wasnt half bad. Anyways fuck this go watch The Town, now that was a VERY good movie.

How does it stack up against other past greats? Are we talking a boiler room, an american psycho, a wall street, a rogue trader?

It wasn't that bad, the dialogue were pretty cheesy and the ending is pretty predictable, its prolly worth a netflix rental sometime down the line

It was an awful movie, but the one line that made the $7 I paid to see it completely worth it was when Jacob (Shia) asked Bretton what his 'number' was... the sum of money he would need to completely abandon Wall Street and Bretton replied, "more." Huge boss.

I don't think the movie would have been horrible if it wasn't a sequel. If it stood alone and wasn't compared to such a classic as the first, I think people would have a slightly different impression of it.

The best parts were the ones that had GG in it, specifically the part on the train when he talks about falling in love with money...this is also where the title/tag line for the movie seems to come from.

The bad parts were that the fiance looks like a boy, it is no where near as good as the original, there is no way Shia could realistically speak Chinese or have graduated from college, lol. Also it was far too predictable.

Not worth going to see in the theater, just wait and grab it through NetFlix or Redbox for a $1.

Gents, I was wrong. It sucked ass. WS2 raped and pissed on the body of WS1. I am still in mourning for what they did to that franchise.

My expectations were "diarrhea"...,reality was " coat hanger abortion".

So over produced and not even a shred of realism. What was Shia's job? Prop trading/investment banking/private equity / broker? All of those animations were absurd. The biggest crime though...that pixie lesbian known as gekko's daughter.

I can't stop thinking of what it could have been if Oliver Stone had focused on telling a solid narrative instead of sharing his own personal views.

And I agree about focusing on fewer plot points...would've been more coherent and made more sense.

How about those charts on the NYC skyline, random animations of the renewable energy plant, and also loved the artistic vision portrayed in the numbers all over peoples faces and those cloud-like popup bubbles whenever Shia got a call from someone else... I never knew you could do so much on imovie - props Oliver.
