(Dis)Approved haircuts in IB

Question: What haircuts are acceptable for incoming analysts and summer analysts? Does this change for PE or specific pieces of IB (sector or deal size, etc).

Context: Been mentoring some students and noticed a student with a bad haircut, mentioned he should get a haircut. He asked what's allowed/ recommended and I honestly didn't know so I figured I'd forward the comment here. I'm used to thinking Matt Bomer (White Collar), John Hamm (Mad Men) and Christian Bale (American Psycho) as the main archetypes, but curious what some current analysts to MDs might say. Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about acceptable haircuts in Investment Banking (IB):

  1. General Guidelines for IB Haircuts:

    • Conservative and professional styles are the norm. Think clean, well-groomed, and low-maintenance.
    • Examples of acceptable styles include short fades, classic side parts, or neatly combed hairstyles similar to Matt Bomer, Jon Hamm, or Christian Bale as you mentioned.
    • Avoid anything too trendy, overly styled, or unconventional, as the industry leans towards traditional grooming standards.
  2. Specific Considerations for Black Male Analysts:

    • Short haircuts or fades are commonly seen among black professionals in IB. These styles are considered professional and align with industry norms.
    • Mini afros or natural hairstyles are also acceptable, but they may draw more attention as they are less common. If you’re comfortable with that, it’s fine, but some suggest keeping it simple as an intern to avoid unnecessary scrutiny.
  3. Does This Change for PE or Specific IB Sectors?:

    • The standards are generally consistent across IB and Private Equity (PE). However, some regions or firms may have slightly more relaxed or conservative expectations. For example, European offices might lean more conservative compared to U.S. offices.
    • On trading floors, performance often outweighs appearance, so there might be more flexibility, but it’s still advisable to maintain a professional look.
  4. First Day Advice:

    • For interns or new analysts, it’s recommended to err on the side of caution. A clean haircut paired with a suit and tie is a safe choice. Observe the environment and adapt accordingly.

Encourage your mentees to prioritize professionalism while staying true to their comfort level. A good rule of thumb is to aim for a style that doesn’t distract from their skills and performance.

Are we really at the point where we are asking what haircuts are acceptable?

I have been growing my hair out for a sort of medium long flow, like the pretty boy on love island.

Is this appropriate for IB. I don't want to mog my bald VPs and have them secretly resent me due to hair-envy. I am younger than most analysts and I am quite interested in looking good which rubs some old heads the wrong way with my youthful vigor and beauty.

One time, I was playing with my hair, brushing it back, whilst getting instructions and I was treated like I just committed a war crime

Bald. I’m not paid well enough to afford a $69+tip+tax+gratuity+employee health insurance contribution haircut every 3 weeks.
