Do you choose what IB group you are in?

When you get an IB job, are you told what group you are in, or can you choose? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

EB's typically only (or largely) provide M&A services, so (most) everyone is put in an "M&A" group but aligned to a specific industry. However, some EBs do still follow the mantra of generalist, especially at junior level, so you'll work across industries.  At BBs, M&A is often considered a product similar to lev fin or ECM, so teams are on average a little bigger than your typical coverage group, and analysts and associates will work across industries. Per the above comment, will largely depend on bank.

Most banks will usually have you preference your groups and then the groups themselves will preference the kids they want. Keep in mind that you can end up in any group you preference and that most banks will always have a select few groups that are listed as preferences for almost all of the interns (I.e. M&A for most BBs). You can always break in to a group by networking on your own, but I have noticed that some groups have prolific histories of certain target schools being represented in their respective intern classes.
