Do you ever feel like you've made it?
I'm sure this is a topic that's been covered in other threads, but I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer some perspective here.
I'm a rising junior and just received/accepted an offer to a MM bank that I'm really happy with-- really nice people, growing firm, solid pay, and they only take as many SAs as they have FT slots.
I thought that after finishing the SA recruiting process, I'd feel more satisfaction like I had made it. I know it's naive to say for just an internship, but seeing as how ridiculous the SA process is getting these days, I imagined feeling more of a sense of accomplishment. To be fair, I am so grateful to have been presented with this opportunity, and I know that so many people would kill to have this chance; I am really excited for next summer.
That said, I'm already worrying about extensively networking with the groups I want to be placed in, strategizing potential laterals to more "prestigious" banks, and even buy-side recruiting (which is ridiculous IMO because I wouldn't even start for 4-5 years and I have no clue where I'll be at that point).
To be clear: I'm fine pushing through whatever the processes may be. I don't doubt my persistence or ability. I just want to know what to expect.
For those who have been through it before-- am I getting way ahead of myself? Does this feeling of constantly being eluded by accomplishment ever go away, or is it just something you get used to? At what point (if ever) do you feel like you've finally made it?
This is an extremely common feeling. When you were in high school you probably thought you would finally feel like you succeeded when you made it into your top choice university. Then once there you probably felt like you had to land a great summer internship to feel like a success. Then once you landed that summer internship you felt like you had to land the full-time offer, then once you land the full-time offer you're not going to feel like you're a success until you reach associate, and then VP, and the MD, and once you reach your 40s and you're a millionaire managing director, you're going to regret not starting your own business, or even spending more quality time with family.
My point is there is always something that will keep you from feeling like "you've finally made it." Just do what you can to be mindful and grateful of where you are now. Being ambitious is great, but take the time to appreciate how far you've come. You are successful when you are satisfied with where you are and what you have.
No - I'd trade everything I have for a little bit more.
