Does an Extra Year/Semester Impact Return Offers?
I currently have an offer for the summer of 2019, but I am considering staying on for an extra semester of school (so instead of graduating in May 2020, I would graduate in December 2020). Does anyone have know if these firms would still consider extending a return offer, or would the extra semester force me to recruit again for FT jobs?
I'm also going to be an SA this summer (2018) and was thinking of trying to do the same thing, but ultimately decided it would probably be a bad idea to even ask the firm about it. Think about it - they structure recruiting based on graduation dates, and they recruited you for this SA position on the assumption of a May 2020 graduation. Recruiting numbers are determined based on anticipated firm needs - they recruited X number of 2019 SA's because they anticipate needing X number of FT analysts beginning in the summer of 2020. Why would they offer a return to someone who can't start until December when there's a million other highly qualified candidates who'd be ready to start in the summer? I don't think its worth it, but if you really want to, I'd think about a very tactful way to bring it up with HR or better yet, run it by a close friend in the firm and see what he or she thinks.
Do you think there's any harm in just asking the firm about their policies regarding an extra semester? Would they rescind an offer (I've already signed)?
