Does major matter for IB?
I’m currently a first year at Pepperdine studying business administration and I’m thinking of transferring to another school for sophomore year. Here’s my school list and my plans:
- Vanderbilt (Econ)
- Cornell (Communication)
- Columbia-Barnard the all girls college (Econ)
- USC (Real Estate)
- Washington University in St.Louis (Econ)
Honestly I don’t have any major problems with my current school, but just the name isn’t big enough and the network? I’d def miss Malibu and the small campus if I do leave. Any suggestions if I should shoot for them or just stick with Pepperdine?
I just got an offer from a consulting firm and will work as intern this winter. Should I save all my effort and focus on the career side like building up my resume and activities, rather than focusing on transferring to a “big name” school?
My parents don’t care but if I do decide to transfer I have to ask them for $ for college transfer consulting services, which I feel ashamed for. So I don’t know if I should even bother doing the whole transferring crap, which is time consuming and costly. To be honest, my purpose to transfer to a better school is just for their name(due to my pride) and that will also help me get a job ( I mean initially, like name of the school will probably give a good impression to the recruiters). However, my parents encourage me to start a business of my own.... (which is kind of impossible for an undergrad student), so I prefer going with the crowd what most people do after college. I feel a job will be more financially stable than starting a business as an undergrad.
None of my parents are in the finance field, so I am terribly lost, any suggestions or even life lessons will be greatly appreciated! Thank you guys in advance!
It’s cool that you go the university where Zoey 101 was filmed. That’s the besides the point but I think you should focus on getting IB internships at firms that you desire. Although you are a beginner, you should definitely start attending every information session pertaining to IB that you can. At my college, the big firms like JP Morgan, Bloomberg, Citi, etc. would always host sessions that were led by HR reps and college alumni. School name can help you in some ways but I have seen a good amount of people make it into IB without the big school name. They did it through targeted networking - once again by attending every information session they could, reaching out to people in the IB group at the firm they wanted to join, and applied like hell to all the desirable IB internship programs. I’m from NYC so there is no shortage of opportunities here.
Also forgot to mention that the majors you listed above are fine. I’m not too keen on the communications major even though firms have shown a willingless to recruit outside the typical business school major. I still think econ or finance would give you your best shot at IB. Real estate is fine if you plan to go into REIB.
The best investment banker I know has a psychology degree.
Seriously. This guy can read any one like a book and predict exactly how they will act four steps ahead.
Sounds like his talents are being wasted.
Probably should be playing chess...
