Doomsday Scenario: Is It Acceptable to Leave My Second Job After a Year?
Background:
Graduated college and took a job at a ~$4B growth equity fund in NYC. Got antsy after a year and let a headhunter talk me into a position for a ~$1B shop without much track record. Been here for 6 months but I'm unsure of our funds future. Fund performance is robust and my deal experience is fantastic, but we are having problems with some major investors and the entire company may not exist in 1 - 5 years. I have close to ~$1B of transactions on my resume and otherwise great credentials. Always been a solid interviewer & story-teller.
Question:
How bad does it look if I go back into the job market after I've spent just a year in my new position? I will have an honest, direct and sincere story about why I don't feel secure in the current role, and won't badmouth my current firm, but will make it clear there are genuine concerns driving me to seek new employment.
Good question
Personally I think what matters the most in these situations is your story and how you performed during the time that you spent at your current firm. If you can explain why you want to leave and it’s not something like “I want more prestige” and your performance was fine so nobody can badmouth you then you should be fine
Remember that nobody else will give a sh*t about your career. Nobody will hesitate to let you go in case economy goes bad or smth else happens especially if you were the last to join the firm / team
LIFO always applies when it comes to cost cutting
Yeah but if the LPs at my current shop pullout, the whole office is getting cut.
Is the capital not locked? Ie is your fund not a closed ended one?
