Not looking to hijack thread, but I'm also looking for a room, but starting in July (incoming ASO at EB with prior exp)
I don't even mind if someone is subletting or giving up room on a temporary basis. My current commute is ~1 hour and looking for something a bit more feasible to see if things can work out.
PM me if you know anyone
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps to find a roommate and secure housing in NYC as an incoming analyst:
Leverage WSO Roommate Threads: Many analysts and associates post in WSO threads specifically for finding roommates. For example, threads like the "2017 FT Roommate Thread" or "2021 FT Roommate Thread" are great starting points. These threads often include detailed posts from others in similar situations, listing their preferences, budgets, and contact details.
Reach Out to Your Bank's Incoming Class: Continue reaching out to other incoming analysts at your bank. Even if they aren't looking for a roommate, they might know someone who is. Networking within your class can often lead to connections.
Expand Your Search Beyond Your Bank: Consider connecting with analysts at other banks or firms. Platforms like LinkedIn or alumni networks from your university can be helpful for this.
Preferred Neighborhoods: Hell's Kitchen is a popular choice, but also consider other neighborhoods like Midtown, Murray Hill, or areas below Midtown. These are frequently mentioned in WSO threads as preferred locations for analysts due to proximity to work and social life.
Budget and Roommate Preferences: Be clear about your budget and roommate preferences. For example, many analysts on WSO mention budgets around $1,400–$1,700 for shared apartments. If you're flexible on gender or the number of roommates, it might increase your chances of finding someone.
Use Online Platforms: In addition to WSO, explore platforms like Facebook housing groups, Reddit threads, or apps like Roomi and SpareRoom. These can help you connect with others looking for roommates in NYC.
Timing: Start aggressively looking for apartments around March/April if your start date is in the summer. This aligns with advice from WSO threads, as it gives you enough time to find a place without rushing.
Consider Temporary Housing: If you're unable to find a roommate immediately, consider short-term options like subletting or staying in a furnished apartment for the first few months. This gives you more time to find a suitable roommate and apartment.
By combining these strategies, you should be able to find a roommate and secure housing in NYC. Good luck!
