EE background, target EU uni, no London interviews – am I cooked?

Hey guys,

Eastern European here (think Hungary / Romania tier). Graduated from the #1 business school back home, did 4 internships – 2 of them very relevant (top 1-3 IB/M&A firms in my country/region, not no-name shops). Now I’m at a top target European uni, yet so far I’ve gotten zero interviews for London SA.

Meanwhile I see kids (+chicks) with way less relevant experience and similar language background already landing first rounds.

Is this just bad luck + competitive cycle, or am I basically cooked for London? Should I start pivoting to Frankfurt/Paris/Zurich, or keep spamming apps and praying? What can be wrong with my profile / applications? My resume has been reviews twice by peers and 5 times by experienced mentors working in London.

Any advice from people who were in a similar spot would be appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, you're not "cooked" yet, but there are a few things to consider and steps you can take to improve your chances:

1. Competitive Cycle & Timing

  • London IB recruiting is notoriously competitive, and many banks operate on a rolling basis. If you applied later in the cycle, some spots might already be filled. Keep applying to any open positions and monitor deadlines closely.
  • Consider applying to off-cycle internships, which are less structured but can still lead to full-time offers.

2. Target Other Locations

  • Pivoting to Frankfurt, Paris, or Zurich is a smart move. These markets are also competitive but may have slightly less intense applicant pools compared to London. Your Eastern European background and language skills could be a strong asset in these regions, especially for cross-border deals.

3. Networking

  • Networking is critical, especially in London. If you haven’t already, reach out to alumni from your current university or previous internships who are working in London. Attend virtual or in-person networking events, and don’t hesitate to cold email professionals for informational interviews.
  • Focus on building relationships with people who can push your CV internally. Sometimes, a strong referral can make all the difference.

4. Profile Review

  • If your resume has been reviewed multiple times by experienced mentors, the issue might not be the content but how it aligns with the specific roles you're targeting. Tailor your applications to highlight the most relevant experience for each bank.
  • Ensure your cover letters are personalized and demonstrate a clear understanding of the bank’s culture and focus areas.

5. Language & Cultural Fit

  • While your experience is strong, London banks often value candidates who demonstrate a clear cultural fit. If English isn’t your first language, ensure your communication (both written and verbal) is polished and professional. Practice mock interviews to refine your delivery.

6. Persistence

  • Many candidates face rejection before landing their first London IB role. Keep applying, but also diversify your strategy by targeting other financial hubs and considering boutique firms or smaller banks that might have less rigid hiring cycles.

7. Springboards

  • If you’re still in your first year at the target EU uni, consider applying for spring weeks or insight programs. These can be a great way to get your foot in the door and build connections for future summer internships.

8. Self-Reflection

  • If you’re seeing peers with less experience getting interviews, it’s worth reflecting on what might be missing in your applications. Are you effectively showcasing your unique value? Are you leveraging your internships to tell a compelling story about your skills and achievements?

Final Thoughts:

You’re not out of the game yet. London IB recruiting is tough, but with persistence, strategic networking, and a willingness to explore other markets, you can still land a great opportunity. Keep pushing, and don’t hesitate to pivot if needed—Frankfurt, Paris, and Zurich are excellent alternatives with strong IB markets.

I'm assuming you're at HEC/Bocconi?
Not sure what you mean by top IB in your region/country? If it's a local firm then that might not be seen as top by London recruiters.

Also London recruiting is kind of random from what I've heard, I personally landed a few interviews for London SA with strong EU school + 3 internships one of which was at a strong MM but I'd say just that might not be enough also have to apply early
