Engineer GPA

I'm an engineer with a 3.6 and I got an offer for 2027 SA at a not great middle market firm. I want to upgrade this by recruiting FT but I'm worried by the time to I get to senior year my GPA will be low 3s. As an engineer with ideally a return offer, will BB or EBs or good MMs care about my gpa or is it more about where you did your junior summer internship? For all the business classes I've taken I have a 4.0 which I put on my resume too idk if that helps.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. GPA Considerations for Full-Time Recruiting: While GPA is important, especially for breaking into top-tier firms (BBs, EBs, or strong MMs), your junior summer internship carries significant weight. If you secure a return offer from your current internship, it demonstrates competence and can offset concerns about a declining GPA. However, a low 3s GPA might still raise red flags, particularly at BBs and EBs, which often have stringent academic cutoffs.

  2. Highlighting Strengths: Including your 4.0 GPA in business classes on your resume is a smart move. It shows strong performance in relevant coursework, which can help mitigate concerns about your overall GPA. Be sure to clearly label it as "Business Coursework GPA: 4.0" to avoid confusion.

  3. Engineering Background Advantage: Your engineering background can be a differentiator, especially if you position it as evidence of strong quantitative and problem-solving skills. Many firms value diverse academic backgrounds, particularly in technical roles or groups.

  4. FT Recruiting Strategy:

    • Leverage Your Internship: Build strong relationships during your summer internship and aim for a return offer. Even if you don’t plan to accept it, having a return offer signals strong performance.
    • Network Aggressively: Start networking early with alumni and professionals at BBs, EBs, and top MMs. A strong referral can sometimes outweigh GPA concerns.
    • Prepare for Interviews: Nail the technical and behavioral aspects of interviews. Your ability to demonstrate knowledge and fit can help overcome GPA concerns.
  5. Final Note on GPA: While a declining GPA might be a concern, firms will also evaluate your overall profile, including work experience, networking efforts, and interview performance. Focus on excelling in your internship and positioning yourself as a strong candidate for FT roles.

you are cooked. No honestly do your best to keep your gpa at 3.6.

If you go in the low 3s you won't get screened by EBs and BBs. 3.5 can work for BBs but for EBs I highly doubt it.

Nothing is impossible though, you will just have to network harder probably but yeah low 3s will hurt your chances. Dial in and do everything you can to keep the 3.6

Good luck

Depends on your school IMO, Engineering + Target = nobody cares about your GPA past 3.0

I go to a solid school for engineering but it’s terrible for finance like ppl here go to google Microsoft spacex etc regularly for engineering but if ur a business major here ur cooked
