English Speaking Opportunities in Paris

Hi! I am an M1 student in Paris. I do speak good enough French B2/C1 and many BB banks say most of the work happens in English, but to assimilate well, it is my understanding that you must speak French.

Which banks/boutiques do you think are the best places for non-native French speakers, or teams whicha re quite international? Places where it's relatively easy for non-french candidates to get an interview and subsequently be able to work. Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about English-speaking opportunities in Paris:

  1. International Banks with English-Friendly Environments:

    • Many Bulge Bracket (BB) banks like JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Citi, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) have a strong presence in Paris. These banks often operate in English, especially for client-facing roles or international teams.
    • Lazard and Rothschild are also highly regarded in Paris, with a reputation for being more international in their approach.
  2. French Banks with International Teams:

    • BNP Paribas, Societe Generale (SGCIB), and Credit Agricole (CA-CIB) are major players in Paris. While they are French banks, they have large international teams, particularly in financing and markets divisions, where English is commonly used.
    • Natixis is another French bank with a relatively international outlook.
  3. Boutiques and Local Firms:

    • Some local boutiques like Messier Maris, Bryan Garnier, and Ohana & Co. are known for their strong deal flow and may have opportunities for English-speaking candidates, though French proficiency is often a plus.
    • Firms like Edmond de Rothschild, Cambon Partners, and Sycomore also have a presence in Paris and may offer opportunities for non-native French speakers, depending on the team.
  4. Cultural Considerations:

    • While many banks operate in English, assimilating into the culture and building relationships often requires a good command of French. Your B2/C1 level is a strong asset, but improving your fluency will help you integrate better and expand your opportunities.
  5. Networking Tips:

    • Focus on networking with alumni or professionals in international teams within these banks. Highlight your language skills and international perspective during interviews, as these are valued in cross-border deal-making.

Paris offers a mix of opportunities for non-native French speakers, especially in international banks and teams. However, continuing to improve your French will only enhance your prospects. Good luck!
