I'm in the third week of my SA in new york, and everyone in the office is extremely nice, which is actually a bit contrary to what my expectations were coming in. In fact, every banker I have ever met has been surprisingly nice and laid back. Everyone from the first years to the veteran MDs are welcoming and willing to help and generally not wound too tightly. So today a VP flew in from another office to do a pitch with one of our MDs (keeping in mind VP is two positions below MD at my firm) and was just an absolute jerk to everyone who was lower on the totem pole. Came in acting like they owned the place, yelling and swearing at female associates in the bullpen, barking at people from across the office, and just generally causing a massive scene and shitting on everyone they outranked.
So coming into my internship I would have expected this to some degree. Its a high stress job with a bunch of people demanding perfection on a tight schedule, but this VP just did not fit with the culture of the bank at all. After the fact, an associate told me that he is a rock star as far as deal performance goes, so maybe that is why he gets away with it.
Anyways, TL;DR - In your experience, are your superiors generally nice people, or more often like this VP?
Those nice and laid back MDs will stab you in the back the first chance they get and will continue to do so, over and over again.
