Exposure in first week on desk
Ignore the tag - I don’t know why it’s not changing. I’m a fresh first year IB analyst in a respected group. As I didn’t do a junior internship in the space (have a bit of a different background) I didn’t really know what to expect.
In my first week, my associate had me create the whole IM and teaser to share with the client in a few days. The other first years aren’t even staffed on deals yet. He’s being pretty brutal with me with regards to small formatting errors etc. When something I gave him didn’t add up he told me “I should have fucking known better” and seems to not really like me.
I’m not an idiot, I think it’s just going to take me longer than a week on the desk to get an eye for formatting and making sure everything ties, etc.Is this a normal experience and should I just get used to it and stop beating myself up? Should I be expected to be able to create those materials perfectly in my first week? Or signs of a toxic culture and should look around for other opportunities?
Yeah, sounds pretty toxic, but give it a few months before you reconsider the position. Other staffings could end up much better.
Thanks for the response - I’ll definitely give it time but I just wanted to check to see what the norm is.
Not cool for the ASO to swear at you, and feel free to say "no need to swear" because that's ridiculous. That said, normal to not do much in your first week, make those kinds of mistakes etc. Sounds like a shitty ASO and shitty first staffing. Check on your skill level in 6 months, this type of thing takes a bit.
Appreciate the reply. Next time I’ll definitely tell him that swearing at me is uncalled for - I get that he may have been upset with the mistake but that reaction doesn’t make me better in any way. Will just keep trying to get better.
Failing that, stand up and pop him in the nose. It will probably be your last day at that firm but you’d be looking to lateral anyway
This is actually good. It sounds like he probably sees something in you if he’s giving you this much responsibility so early on. This isn’t a bad thing but the opposite. Toughen up, sharpen up, and lean into it. That’s my read from this. Either way, increased responsibility is good by itself
Curious, how did you break in without doing a summer internship?
