Failed my first IB interview today

I am non target semi hardo in undergrad, (I was applying as a gamble) &  i managed to get an internship interview at a boutique IB (job description said: graduate), which was today:

-> Fit questions went quite well but failed badly on the m&a exercices ( position was for fundraising so i didn't learn the basic exercices (modeling for buy/sell side m&a) and I have no basic knowledge given i am an econ major undergrad at non target)

So I was wondering, is it worth I continue to apply for this kind of positions given I don't have profile yet (plan to go target graduate after gap year) and try to get internship at startups before going to graduate & than applying for this kind of positions?

(My long term end goal is to build my own vc firm)

When you say you don't know the basics, do you don't know the basic for merger models or your don't know the basics for finance like accounting? If it's the latter, you can still start grinding now and be in a much better position for banks that recruit later in the summer. I also tanked the technical part of an interview, but you just have to keep going.

Yeah it was M&A teaser and some model on excel for buyside. I never had finance class in econs bachelor for this so I guess I have to work hard this summer to learn on my own

Non-target means nothing in this discussion. You got the interview. It’s on you to study and prepare more. For every IB job, there are hundreds of people that would sell their soul for the position. Don’t make excuses. Work hard.
