Failed Series 79 Twice Now

The firm I work for gives me 7 months to obtain my licenses. I've passed SIE and 63, but unfortunately I have failed the S79TO twice now (first time 66%, second time 72%). Is my job on the line for the last exam? Is this jus unheard of? How do I make sure I pass now?

Failing the Series 79 twice is not unheard of, and you're not alone in this situation. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know and do to ensure you pass on your next attempt:

  1. Job Security Concerns:

    • Some firms have strict policies regarding licensing exams, with a "one and done" or limited-attempt policy. However, this varies by firm. It's crucial to have an open conversation with your HR or manager to understand the specific expectations and consequences.
    • If your firm has given you 7 months to obtain your licenses, you may still have time to prepare and pass the Series 79 before the deadline.
  2. Why You Might Be Struggling:

    • The Series 79 is known to be challenging, covering a wide range of IBD and ECM/DCM functions, including capital markets advisory and restructuring.
    • Scoring close to the passing threshold (72% on your second attempt) suggests you're on the right track but may need to refine your study approach.
  3. How to Ensure You Pass:

    • Study Materials: Use high-quality prep materials like Knopman or Kaplan. Many users on WSO recommend Knopman for its comprehensive videos and question banks.
    • Practice Exams: Focus on taking practice exams until you're consistently scoring in the mid-80s or higher. This is a strong indicator of readiness.
    • Target Weak Areas: Analyze your previous test results to identify weak areas. Spend extra time mastering those topics.
    • Study Schedule: Create a structured schedule. For example, aim to cover one chapter every two days and allocate time for review and practice questions.
    • Test-Taking Strategy: The Series 79 often includes tricky, similar-sounding answer choices. Practice rationalizing your answers and understanding the nuances of the questions.
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Time Management: Allocate enough time to review all material thoroughly.
    • Seek Support: If your firm offers study classes or resources, take advantage of them.
    • Stay Calm: Test anxiety can impact performance. Practice mindfulness or relaxation techniques to stay focused during the exam.

Remember, many individuals have faced similar challenges and successfully passed on their next attempt. With the right preparation and mindset, you can do the same!
