Finance careers ranked by intellectual demand

Dear all,

To be clear, I'm not looking for a definitive ranking, but rather a comparison of different roles in finance. This post has a genuinely serious purpose and I would really appreciate your input.

The issue is, I find working in sell-side research (FICC) to be too "academic" at times. Don't get me wrong, it's very interesting and requires a genuine effort to think, reason, break the world apart, analyse it, and come to some meaningful conclusion. I enjoy it on the whole, however, at times I feel like I never left school and feel a little distant from the 'real stuff' going on (please spare the "is research front office" comments).

Has anyone moved around different divisions, perhaps different internships or lateraled within the same institution, that could comment on their experience in different roles in this respect? Did you prefer being involved in transactions/deals, did you prefer working a lot more in a client facing role, or perhaps did it not turn out as you expected?

Would be really keen to hear from people that moved from research to IBD, sales, or anywhere else.

Thanks in advance WSO community!
