Large MM / “Balance Sheet Bank

  • Training: month long before start, outsourced
  • First Deal: sellside passed down from another departing analyst; first one that was “mine” was probably 6 months in
  • Pitches: a lot. First years on my team typically got stuck on all the major bake-offs, IPO RFPs, etc. Probably had like 5-6 major sprints in the first 100 days
  • Deal Team Size Initially: Calling officer (MD/D), VP, Associate, Analyst. We had a lot of departures right around when I started so frequently cut out a layer of that as well
  • Learning Curve: it’s a lot but IMO not terrible if you did the internship with the same bank. Also I came from a finance degree so was ahead of the curve. Probably started feeling comfortable around 5-6 months in
  • Meeting the Team: I started in 2020 so can’t speak to much here. Aside from those during my internship, I didn’t meet the rest for almost a year. Personally didn’t mind this at all and it’s more or less inspired me to find a fully remote job soon. Was by no means a banking lifer so had no interest in meeting anyone lol
  • Who typically did the on the job training? I’m very much someone who prefers to just dig through old decks and backups to reverse engineer stuff myself. So largely… me. But besides that pretty ad hoc, it was harder since we were remote. Mainly second year analysts or younger / more accessible associates.
  • First 100 days harder or easier than 100-200? From a learning perspective, harder. From the fact that my 100-200 were like January-March of 2021 when everyone in my group lateraled and deals was wildfire, much easier. I would say excluding changes in deal flow / crazy understaffing, the first 100 are the hardest. 100-200 you start to settle in

Work at a LMM:

  • Training: Month 1
  • First Deal: Month 3 (heavily supported by associate)
  • Pitches: >10 over 4 months
  • MD, VP, AS, AN (Total 4 people, sometimes they throw 2 AN)
  • Learning Curve: Steep, biggest takeaway is to always 3x check your work, and pay lots of attention to detail/formatting
  • Meeting the Team: Worked with the firm in 2021 as a SA and was able to work in person. This was huge especially for the social scene as our group loved to go out at least once a week for drinks
  • On Job Training: Training lead by AN2
  • First 100 days were much harder then 100-200, that being said the ramp up of responsibilities can be overwhelming but I felt more confident after surviving the first 100
