First Internships
Just curious what internships or work experience people had to segue into a summer analyst role? How old you were when you did it?
And also, would a 10-week IB & capital markets controls internship with a major bank straight out of high-school be valuable when applying for later FO internships at college?
Yes take that internship. Most people don't even have a finance internship that year.
With regards to work experience that most people do the summer prior to their junior year SA, I would advise trying to get any sort of boutique (or better) IB or PE role. Anything that proves M&A deal exposure will set you apart sufficiently.
The internship technically isn't front office, but it's a risk control team that works with front office, and client-facing positions.
As for PE or IB internships, are boutique bank internships more valuable than BB internships?
What matters most is the relevant experience to IB you get. I'd say getting the front office role at a boutique is more valuable than back office at BB or EB. Just leverage that experience to get a EB/BB SA gig the next summer. But for now, just take that internship offer you have, it's a big edge for someone coming out of highschool.
yeah dude you just finished hs, relax and enjoy college for a bit. you shouldn't really care right now about FO/BO for your freshman year summer. I worked fucking doordash that summer.
my point in bringing up boutique ib/pe for sophomore summer is to say that those will most likely be your main options (unless you're diversity, you're not going to work at a BB/EB IBD until your junior summer). regardless, having anything along the lines of an internship for freshman summer will make you competitive for sophomore summer jobs, which then help with junior year recruiting.
also a point worth beating to death - you're very early in this process and will save yourself a lot of unnecessary stress by not using this website regularly. you will soon find out that WSO - for the most part - is a giant echo chamber of 18 year olds who have never even worked in IB. you'll laugh at these kinds of posts in a few years because this shit really isn't worth worrying about when you haven't even started college. It shows that you're dedicated, but do yourself a HUGE favor and go be a kid for the last couple years you get the chance. If you want IB and work hard when the time comes, you'll get it.
Thanks for the ms bro. glad i can help :)
Starting by answering your question about a 10-week internship with a major bank: Yes!! Absolutely it would help. At a minimum it would be an outstanding resume bullet point to have early in your undergrad years. They might also bring you back for subsequent summers.
My first internship was a 2-week gig at a family friend's portfolio company between freshman and sophomore year of college. The following summer I worked a 10-week internship with a company in my industry of choice. This helped me gain the industry experience necessary to land a summer analyst position at EVR/LAZ/MOE the following summer.
That's excellent! EVR/Laz/Moe are strong names.
Would you have any networking recommendations to land those internships with family friends, etc.?
