First year analysts
Are all first year analysts entry level positions? Can someone, like myself, with a year or two experience doing private placements at a small market IB get a fair look at a large bank like Goldman or Lehman?

maybe at a 2nd or 3rd tier bank, but definately not at a top-tier firm...
first year is entrey level but maybe you'd get hired as a 2nd year. i know of this happening, but usually you go down in prestige, not up
Who laterals to a lower-tier firm?
depends on business line and company need.
in general though the jump may be too big going from small shop to top bb.
You could lateral hire as a second year. I know a couple of guys in my group who did that.
There were also a couple of guys in my group that lateraled as second years, and they def lateraled up.
