From FO transfered to MO/BO?
I started an internship some weeks ago in a MM in a FO role. The first weeks were mostly doing small tasks, doing some trainings, etc. 2-3 weeks in the internship I receieve an announcement from my MD that they will transfer me from the role I signed for to a completely different role (think MO/BO role) for more than half of my internship duration (a sort of "could you" but mostly where you're pushed into it). This role is supposedely temporary but it takes almost 70-80% of the total time of the internship.
How should I take this? I'm somewhat pissed of because it looked like a good shop, but if I had knew this, I would have clearly opted for other opportunities that I was offered back then when I accepted the current role.
I tried to discuss with my MD and seniors and they just told me "Give it a try and see how it goes". This clearly reflects poor on the company, but is there any way to reverse this type of deviation and hopefully remain where I am? I'm well aware what the MO/BO role will entail, and it's something that it's a big NO for me.
I'm looking to jump ship ASAP, but wanted to get some perspectives on what to think of/do with this situation. Appreciate any insights. Thanks guys.
Ignore title.
This is dependent on what your situation is. If your American and in college, and this is serving as an internship for future recruiting, I would say it wouldn't matter, and it's a great internship to have on your resume. I would still talk to your MD, say you're eager to learn more about the FO and try to take more responsibility there.
If this is more of an off-cycle situation, I think you're still forced do it unfortunately. If you don't, you're seen as difficult to work with and "not a team player". But at the same time, do it, but emphasis the nature of your FO duties when recruiting again.
Best of luck man.
Agreed - don’t list any of the MO/BO stuff on your resume and only talk about your FO experience.
dont forget - yes, it is incredibly shitty that they did this to you, however these are unfortunately the people you will need to be called on as a reference, so just get this internship over with
Thanks for this. I was thinking of leaving, but seeing how's the job market it seems that I'm trapped. I try to be optimistic thinking that I least I have something to put on the resume and save a bit of money, but I won't lie, it definietely affects one's morale when you come with high expectations and then your thrown into something completely different that don't even reach half of your expectations.
Sounds like the FO role didn't have enough work to do / capacity for an intern but the BO role needed someone. Don't think this is reversible and also would strongly advise against quitting an internship which is a huge red flag on the resume. It sucks but it is just an off-cycle internship. It ultimately doesn't matter all that much.
Agree with the others here... emphasize the FO tasks when talking about this opportunity, but otherwise just grin and bear it until the internship is over. Be nice to the BO people, not to say it'll be an incredible experience but you never know who might be able to help you down the line.
Thank you very much - that's some great advice and perspective. But if I manage to find another internship in the next weeks/month, would that be more acceptable in terms of leaving my current internship? I'm so frustrated with this arrangement that I'm ready to leave it off from my resume if I find something else where they could take me ASAP.
Assuming I'm planning to look into something else and in case of acceptance leave my current internship, how acceptable would that be? Would you have some advice on how to approach/search/explain this? It makes sense to even try it? Thanks.
No I would not do that unless your internship is 6 months or something very long. From your post it seems like you only have 6ish weeks in the BO role. Maybe ask them if you can end a week or two early due to [midterms/finals/upcoming travel] but other than that I would just show up with a smile, it's still work experience.
I assume you have other internships (i.e. an upcoming summer internship) that will fill out your resume. As long as this isn't your only internship you are fine. It's disappointing but not a bridge worth burning.
If this is your only internship / you still just really want to get a new internship, you can talk to your team and say due to the shift of work you've decided to pursue a different opportunity. Can leave it off your resume if you want.
Thanks for the advice, I will definitely follow what you've said. However, I have more of a curiosity: How it would play out to tell them "I don't want to do it, that's not what I signed for" to remain at my current place. I would pull a such move assuming I have another offer on the table that may be starting in some weeks (so I would have time to see how they will adjust to my refusal and based on that to decide if to remain or move on).
In your experience how will they take it? Will I be fired because of some made-up reasons, will they bury me in boring tasks, will they just leave me alone for the rest of the internship to do whatever I would consider, etc? Thanks again.
They don't need to make up any reasons, they can fire you at any time for any reason or no reason at all (assuming you're in the US).
You are an intern. I think you are being more than a little presumptuous here. At the vast majority of companies the internship is really to help you get work experience, it's not like you bring any unique skills at this time in your career and they cover the work just fine the rest of the year.
Absolutely yes, this is a frustrating situation, but a good early lesson that things don't always work out. Sometimes you just need to be the bigger person, and be humble and gracious even if things don't go your way. There is simply no reason to burn a bridge or try to "teach them a lesson" over a short internship.
