From Hard Upbringings to Consulting and Now Eyeing IB: Seeking Guidance/Mentors

I'm opening up in hopes of connecting with those who've faced similar challenges—particularly fellow women, first-gen, and anyone from tough backgrounds (low income, dysfunctional families)—or who can offer insights into breaking into IB. Background: I was raised by a single mother who immigrated from rural China with no formal education beyond primary school. To this day, she can't read or write in any language. My upbringing was tough, but I secured a full-ride scholarship and graduated from a large public non-target school. Professional Path: I started my career at big4 management consulting. I achieved multiple promotions, eventually reaching the manager level. I focused on healthcare strategy and M&A, but after about six years, a client recruited me for a strategy role. I’m also pursuing a part time MBA at a T20 school and expect to graduate in spring 2025. Transition to Investment Banking: As I attempt to pivot to IB, I know how crucial networking and mentorship are. Most of my network doesn’t know my background, so I’m casting my net wide and hoping to connect with others who can—or who simply value my underdog story and are willing to help me expand my network. I understand that breaking into IB requires more than just effort—it requires the right guidance and connections. I’m seeking mentors who can help me navigate this transition and share insights.
