Frustration and Job Performance

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone had experience being very frustrated with their current role, a role in their past and how it correlated to their performance. I really hate the boutique bank I work at, and it has gotten to a point where I could care less about the way I perform.

  • 2 blatant racist incidents

  • I asked for training but the firm refused, so I paid for my own training program

  • Base comp is 55K a year (live in Toronto), and I got paid full bonus every time which was 10 grand a piece lol

  • Staffed on a Saturday until 3 am while my staffer was out drinking with his friends, and we had a board meeting the next day. He gave very unclear instructions about the deliverable

  • Literal public beratement

  • Forced to come into the office while I had the flu

  • Mid year review lasted all about 2 minutes, my staffer did not really have an interest in talking about my exp thus far

  • forced to come into work throughout the entire pandemic and was exposed to COVID multiple times lol

  • Staffer said he was going to bang another juniors gf, but apparently he was "joking"

The list could go on, but after all these experiences I could care less about this business and if they make money or not. If someone can offer some advice on how to deal with the frustrations until I make a lateral move, that would be much appreciated.

Would be careful not to dox yourself But im too curious, is this firepower lol

I agree that your environment sounds toxic, but not very different from my bank.  To be fair, pay is not an issue for my bank (AN1 was 200k).  But the expectation is that we all work til midnight most nights and we are typically working most weekends.  If there is a live deal, we work much later and don’t get any protected time off.   Training is limited, aside from the generic 3 weeks at the beginning when you get hired. You are expected to teach yourself,  to learn on your own quite a bit, and to ask others for help.  It’s a lot of sink or swim at my bank.   No one gets a sick day typically with WFH, we do the “best” we can.  So lots of people have worked through COVID and everyone has been exposed to COVID.  Literally, no one calls in sick unless they are in the hospital or completely incapacitated.  I am not saying it’s ok, but issues like racism and sexism exist everywhere.  Inappropriate comments occur in my office pretty regularly. Sometimes it’s more overt and sometimes it’s more covert.   Its not a warm and fuzzy environment lol.  In terms of work performance, we will get reamed out publicly if our work is subpar, so even though many don’t feel invested their work, people continue to work hard and put together a good work product. I get what you are saying, but what you are describing isn’t all that unusual in IB.  Hang in there and lateral when you can.  But don’t fool yourself by thinking that the grass is always greener.

I agree with your analysis, but at least pay me bitch. No one chooses this career for passion. Are you at a CAD bank?
