Full-time 2025 Banking Application Process

Hi everyone,

I want to start a thread for tips and suggestions regarding the Full-time 2025 recruiting process. Specifically, I am looking for information on banks that sponsor international students, whether they are BBs, MMs, or Boutiques.

I came from a non-target school. I have found it challenging to recruit for banking positions due to visa restrictions. I hold a STEM degree, which allows me up to three years of working in the US after graduation without sponsorship. My plan is to indicate "no need for sponsorship" when applying and to pursue an MBA after my visa expires. However, I'm unsure how this will be perceived by HR.

My background includes three internships in the capital markets, my current role as a Front Office intern at an asset management firm for the summer, and an upcoming investment banking fall analyst position at a regional IB.

Do you have any advice on how I can successfully recruit for full-time IB positions in 2025? What should be my networking strategy to maximize the chance of getting an interview? How should I prepare for my interviews besides the 400 IB questions?

Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some detailed tips and strategies for successfully recruiting for full-time IB positions in 2025, especially considering your background and visa situation:

Networking Strategy

  1. Maximize Initial Outreach:

    • Leverage Strengths: Determine if you are better at in-person networking or online. If in-person, set up coffee dates; if online, focus on calls and emails.
    • Mutual Connections: Ensure your connections are mutually beneficial. Highlight what makes you interesting or valuable to potential connections.
  2. Cold Email/Cold Connect:

    • Target Alumni and Professionals: Reach out to alumni and professionals in the industry. Use LinkedIn and other professional networks to find commonalities.
    • Track Interactions: Keep an Excel sheet to track who you spoke to, the last time you spoke, and the topics discussed. This helps in maintaining and nurturing relationships.
  3. Follow-Up and Referrals:

    • Ask for Introductions: After establishing a connection, ask if they can introduce you to others in their group or office, especially those involved in recruitment.
    • Repeat the Process: Consistently reach out to new contacts and follow up with existing ones. Even a 20% success rate can lead to significant opportunities.

Interview Preparation

  1. Build Your Story:

    • Excitement and Passion: Figure out what excites you about investment banking and let that passion come through in your conversations.
    • Concrete Examples: Use stories from your internships and current roles to illustrate your interest and experience in the field.
  2. Consulting Networking Tips:

    • Positive Interactions: Every interaction with a firm is assessed. Ensure you leave a positive impression in all your communications, whether through emails, phone calls, or in-person meetings.
    • Mock Interviews and Case Competitions: Participate in mock interviews and case competitions to practice and improve your skills.
  3. Preparation Beyond the 400 IB Questions:

    • Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on the latest trends and news in the banking industry. This will help you answer technical questions and engage in meaningful conversations.
    • Behavioral Techniques: Practice common behavioral questions and develop strong, concise answers that highlight your skills and experiences.

Visa and Sponsorship Considerations

  1. Indicate No Need for Sponsorship:

    • STEM OPT Extension: Clearly state that you do not need sponsorship due to your STEM degree, which allows you to work for up to three years post-graduation.
    • Future Plans: Be prepared to discuss your long-term plans, such as pursuing an MBA, and how they align with the firm's goals.
  2. Target Firms That Sponsor:

    • Research: Identify banks that have a history of sponsoring international students. This includes BBs, MMs, and boutiques.
    • Leverage Connections: Use your network to get insights into which firms are more open to sponsoring international candidates.

Additional Tips

  • Persistence: Networking is a numbers game. Don't be discouraged by rejections; focus on the connections that lead to opportunities.
  • Personalized Templates: Develop a few great email templates for different scenarios and personalize them for each contact.

By following these strategies, you can enhance your chances of securing a full-time IB position in 2025. Good luck!

You would need sponsorship lol. Its not as easy as checking a box and then going to MBA after, kinda don’t work like that.

My partner gone through the same thing just a while ago, your firm needs to sponsor you even for OPT, especially if you ran out of first year OPT and are going to use the STEM one. It would require HR and lawyers to fill out a whole load of stuff and if you lie on your application, odds are you aren’t getting an interview or will have offers withdrawn.
