Full Time Recruiting From a Non Target

I was curious regarding the process of full time recruiting from non-targets. I landed a mid-tier MM offer for this coming Summer of 26' and was looking for FT recruit to an Upper MM or a misc BB. My school does not have many estabilished alumni across the industry and I do not want to get burned by reaching out to people and it getting back to my group. Does anyone have general advice? Is cold emailing still the move? Or should I just cold apply?

I did it this past year, albeit in cap markets. I’d hit all your angles, use your network, cold email and mass apply.

Hard part is getting the 1st round ofc but once you do, just lock in to beat out the other kids. Way fewer spots than SA.

ignore title - it’s stale

interned at a MM industry boutique summer of ‘24 and moved to a BB for FT from a super non-target - it’s difficult but very doable. i wouldn’t recommend trying to network before your summer starts as people will ask unnecessary questions (+ it’s a small industry). network with people you know from SA recruiting starting in week 4-5 of the internship and make sure to apply ASAP once FT apps open. keep your leads warm and with a bit of luck you’ll get 1 or 2 interviews, from then it’s on you to convert.

all of this advice is useless if you don’t get a return offer btw

Do you have to network with people you already know or can you make new connections?

you can definitely make new connections - new people just aren’t as warm to the rerecruiting idea / know how much of an uphill battle it is.

people who know you already will understand your story and be willing to vouch for you

Is it doing too much to email updates from SA recruiting contacts before the summer begins? I just haven't really kept in touch bc I don't want to clog up their inbox but wanted to establish a touchpoint so it doesn't feel like I'm just relying on them for FT recruiting when/if the time comes mid-summer
