Getting rejections from summer internships

I've been getting rejections for the summer internships I've been applying for. I'm giveadvicepls so you probably already know my background (non-target undergrad, semi-target masters at a top 10 uni).

What am I supposed to don now? Off-cycles are more competitive and IB recruitment in London has been far too competitive and I'm not even getting summers. What are my next steps at this point assuming my remaining IB applications also end in rejections?

Bro, you’ve spammed this sob story a dozen times now. You think you’re too good for the options, but let’s be real- you don’t have the balls or the grit.

Either take the solid advice people have already given you, or admit that you’re too ‘elite’ for the real hustle and stick to the cushy trust fund life.

You slink back with a fresh account every-time, only to keep proving that you’re a capital clown. Save the venting for your pissy Notes app my guy.

Suicidal because the geezer craves stupid prestige to absolve his self hatred.

Privileged life equals money being 0 problem- all about rocking status and steering clear of anything inferior deemed beneath.

This guy has the motivation to continue making posts like this, but that's where his motivation ends lmao. It's as if he's searching for that one answer that will justify his inaction and make him feel better about doing nothing in addressing his admittedly shit situation. Get a grip, accept your non-prestigious shit-tier IB offer, and put in the work to get to where you want to be.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps you can take if you're facing rejections for summer internships:

  1. Explore Other Finance Roles with Transferable Skills:

    • Look into internships in corporate or commercial banking, valuation, or corporate finance. These roles can provide valuable experience and skills that are transferable to investment banking (IB).
  2. Network with Boutiques:

    • Boutique investment banks often have less defined recruitment cycles. Networking with these firms can increase your chances of landing an internship or full-time role.
  3. Consider Asset Management or Equity Research:

    • Internships or part-time jobs in asset management or equity research can also provide relevant experience. These roles often involve interaction with various funds and exposure to financial analysis, which are beneficial for a future IB career.
  4. Leverage Your University Resources:

    • Utilize your university's career services and alumni network. They can provide guidance, connections, and potentially open doors to opportunities you might not have considered.
  5. Look into Off-Cycle Internships:

    • While more competitive, off-cycle internships are still a viable option. Keep applying and networking to increase your chances.
  6. Consider a Different Internship for the Summer:

    • If you receive an offer from a non-IB role, such as research at a reputable company, consider taking it. The experience and the name on your resume can still be valuable.
  7. Prepare for Full-Time Recruiting:

    • Use the summer to prepare for full-time recruiting in the fall. This includes refining your resume, practicing interview skills, and continuing to network.
  8. Stay Positive and Persistent:

    • It's important to stay positive and persistent. Many successful professionals faced similar challenges early in their careers. Keep your mind open to various possibilities and continue to work hard.

Remember, it's not the end of the world if you don't land an IB internship immediately. There are multiple paths to achieving your career goals in finance.
